Journey to Albany, NY (Captain's Log)

Note to reader: Never, ever, take a 800+ mile trip with a bike straped to your car.  You will hate the bike and your life, too.

5.30.01
Day 1

12:23pm - pull out of driveway in Charlotte
1:10pm - Stop in Mooresville for gas and potty; Mileage: 26498, gas is $1.53 / gal
4:26pm - Lost in VA w/o a working cell phone.  Stopped at a gas station to call Dad and now blocked in by gas truck
5ish - Land in Grandma and Grandpa's driveway.  Grandpa make me bbq chicken and Grandma made mashed potatoes and pineapple upside-down cake.  Aunt Vivki, Uncle Gene and Carla came over.  We all played w/ Carla (less Uncle Gene, who had to leave) for a long while afterwards.  She learned a new word: "Go!"  Embarrassing moment: lost my chasity ring down the bathroom drain.  Grandpa rescued it for me in the AM.

Day 2  5.31  Roanoke to DC

11:26am - leave Grandparents' 26700
Stopped @ Kline's.  Got vanilla - slightly disappointed
2:51pm - Strap in bike better, buy drink 26873  65F.  What is this?!  Winter?
3:40pm 26894 Stop in the Plain, VA.  Cute!
4:18pm Bumper sticker: Where there's a whip, there's a wag. (in DC)

Day 3   DC to Scranton

12:47  just finished eating @ Schlotsky's after Molly lost her mind looking for a stupid parking spot
1:25pm Left Nat'l Geographic Museum.  Little disappointing.  Ventured to St. Matthew's where there was mass.
1:46pm  Waiting for Metro
2:10pm  @ Molly's
3:03pm  Away from DC.  Hope bike doesn't fall off 26947
4:14p, abt to get on 81.  Stop to check bike and apply sunscreen 27005
6:49pm  Road - post Subway 27141
7:45pm  27188 The Best Western overbooked --> Ramada
worked out and got some sleep

Day 4  Wilkes-Barre, PA to Albany, NY

10:09am - Leave Ramada hoping bike's secure.  Gotta get gas.  Note: can't find BP card, big problem. 27188
10:35am - Stop to take photos of old bldg and fix annoying bike strap
10:45am got gas 27190
12pm NY Welcome Ctr 27257

Note: After this I got lost in Albany, it started to rain, and I had to reattach my bike to my car on the side of an offramp.  Not a good thing.

Strawberry Festival

6.15.01 Mayfield, NY

We started towards Mayfield but when we were an hour into the trip Vicki, Christal, and I decided to turn back b/c we were still ~45 min away.  It was still nice b/c we took some back roads and it was gorgeous; the air smelled nice and the clouds were beautiful.  Upside: stopped at a park and got a Hush Puppie slushy and watched some little leauge.  Downside: missed festival and nearly got merged into by an old guy on 87.

University of Rochester Visit

Check this bad boy out on the web: http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/

I also was accepted into UR's summer REU program (same grant as what I had at Wadsworth) and in the process had my curiousity piqued about their grad program, so I arranged a visit.  I spoke with several principal investigators and grad students and overall, it sounds like a possibility.  I am trying to convince myself that bad weather is not a valid reason to not apply...

My summary in update form
