OFFICIAL STATEMENT MADE BY
HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS JOSE IZZAGUERRA

REAGARDING CUBA'S INTENTION TO RATIFY THE TREATY OF TLATELOLCO
FROM THE OFFICE OF
HRM JOSE IZZAGUERRA
The Government of Eslo expresses its satisfaction towards Cuba for that nation's intention to ratify the Treaty of Tlatelolco.  The treaty, opened for signature in February of 1967, created the first ever nuclear weapons free zone in the world

Today, Cuba made a motion towards its intent to ratify the treaty at the United Nations General Assembly, becoming the last Latin American or Carribean state to do so.  With Cuba's signature, all of Latin America can now be officially free of nuclear weapons.  It is quite satisfactory for Eslo to say that this applies to both macro and micronational spheres.

The treaty was origianally established by Alfonso Garca Robles, 1982 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.  Because of its significance to the sovereignty of Latin American states and their desire to be rid of nuclear weapons, the treaty has been hailed by the Eslonian government from the very begining of foreign policy.

This move shows more clearly that the cold war is over.  It is now impossible for a country like that of the Soviet Union to apply political pressure to governments such as that of Cuba in order to wage nuclear warfare.  The Cuban Missle Crisis of the early 60's shows all nations the dangers of nuclear weapons.

Eslo will continue to advocate for the complete and absolute destruction of nuclear weapons around the world.  The entire globe should take the pacifist ideas of Latin America and apply them for the greater good of their societies.  The Government of Eslo hopes that President Castro will make more choices similar to this one, thus bringing democracy and human rights to Cuba.

The Government of Eslo also congrtulates the numerous Latin American governments for their successful lobbying of Cuba towards a safer world.
