The History of Spa Town Piestany

Quite resort town of Piestany was founded in 1889 in the picturesque valley of the Vah river. The spa is renowned for successful treatment of arthrisis. Many treatmemt methods are based on an extraordinary therapeutic effects of thermal springs and curative mud. Thrermal springs and the mud have been used intensively at Piestany spa since the 16th century, in the time when the Renaissance had begun. The first cure house was built after the Napoleonic wars in 1822. In that time the spa called as Napoleonic spa. For a very long time therapeutic effects of Piestany īs hot springs remained an unsolved mystery. The real blossoming and international reputation of the spa resort occured after acquisition by the burgher Winter family. The construction started at the beginning of 20th century. For over two hundreds years, Piestany has been magnet for geussts from all over the world. The athmosphere of the city is completed by fine arts and architecture. In addition, to the well-known symbol of spa-the sculpture of Crutches-broker by the sculptor R. Kuhmayer and since 1933 the city is decorated by the construction of Colonnade Bridge in functionalistic style by well-known Slovak architect Emil Bellus.
