Charles Weatherford and his brother, John, came to Georgia in 1750. In 1770 Charles
moved on to Creek nation and settled in the Little Tallisee area. Some time in 1780
he took up with Sehoy, the widow of John Tait.
Charles life among the Creeks was tainted from the beginning. In 1782 the Georgia
General Assembly banned him from the state under the penelty of death if he
returned. He was a known horse thief and cheat. In the McGillivray letters some of
his activities are mentioned.
Charles was a packhorseman for the McGillivarys. He was caught steeling from the
Panton-Leslie-Forbes trading firm, in which McGillivary was a partner. He was
arrested at Pensacola, but McGillivary interceded and had him released so he could
take care of his family. McGillivray suggested that Weatherford's property be siezed
for the debts he owed Leslie. After continued bad behavior McGillivray stated that
"he is a notorios offender and should suffer the riguors of law". McGillivray also
said that "if Weatherford comes within 10 miles of my house I will serve him as he
justly deserves".
In a letter from Onell to Miro he says that two informants who were mad at
McGillivray for passed insults promissed secret information to him. Shortly after
Onell identifies them as Charles Weatherford and John Lender.
In other documents the information points to the association of Weatherford to
William A. Bowles. Lender and Weatherford went into Georgia and told the Indians not
to listen to the Americans. The French at New Orleans had sent a man (Olivier) to
live with McGillivray, and the British were going to cut off relations with them.
On Weatherford's break with McGillivray he went to live on McGillivray's plantation
at Little River. He did not return until after McGillivray's death in 1793. On May
28, 1798, at the National Council held in Tuckabatchee, the Chiefs said that
Weatherford was an "unworthy character and unfit to be in their land". Because he
was married to Sehoy, a Wind Clan woman, they could not expell him. Weatherford was
not a friend to the Americans, British, French, or Spanish. He would use what ever
means he could to obtain wealth.
On 28 July 1798 Samuel Thomas, in Coweta, informed Alexander Cornell that a
man had passed his place and had not stopped to state his business. He was thought
to be going to Weatherfords and Baileys. In a letter from Burgess to Hawkins, 17
July 1798, he said that Thomas Lott and an unidentified white man had passed his
house without stoping. Burgess said they had been to Tallauhassee, and told Wilson
they had urgent business with Weatherford. John Wilson was a supplier of Bowles. The
man was thought to be coming from Mickasuckee, which was under Spanish control. At
that time the Spanish had Guns and Amunition for the Creeks to war on the whites. At
this same time William Bowles was trying to take over of the nation.
In the 1813 War he was contracted to the United States Government to supply horses
to the Army. He would buy stolen horses from the Indians, sell them to the
Government, then send the Indians to steal them back. On the death of McGillivray,
through Sehoy, Weatherford obtained a considerable wealth.
Charle's son, William, seems to have recieved none of his fathers abilities.
Being born with a silver spoon in his mouth, so to speak. I am yet to be convinced
that he was the brave and cunning individual history writers have made him out to
be. Actual statements of people, other than his imediate family, show different.
Reports say he was a carefree young boy that would not go to school, and his only
interest was sports, horses, and gambling. He was known to be a good wrestler and
foot racer. There are stories that have it appear that William showed his bravery in
the capture of Bowles almost single handidly. A compleat lie. The true story is,
when Bowles and his band of warriors came to Tuckabatchee they were surrounded by a
large number of Upper Creek warriors. These warriors were led by Ben Hawkins the
Agent, Forbes, Bob Walton, The Singer, Effa Haujo, and Samuel Moniac. William was
there, but only because he new they had the upper hand from the beginning. When
Bowles and his warriors surrendered the only part William played was when he and Sam
Moniac stepped forward and bound him. Sam and William were sent to deliver Bowles to
Mobile. While camped on the river Bowles convieniently excaped, but was recaptured
shortly after.
When preparations were first being made by the hostiles for war, William and
Sam Moniac were on their return from making a cattle deal with the Chickasaw. They
were stopped by the hostiles and told if they did not join them they would kill them
and their families. Sam Moniac did not take the talk, and snatched the War Club from
Joshia Frances hand and made his excape. William remained, afraid to leave.
William did not want to join them, but they held his family hostage and he
consented. In his own words, he said the only reason he joined them was because he
was afraid he would be called a coward, and second, to try and stop them from
killing woman and children.
The story of him jumping his horse off a cliff into the water to excape is a
compleat fabrication. He turned his horse down a revine, went around the cliff, and
rode back up to the head of the creek.
During the war William was at the sight of only two of the battles, and did not
fight in either. One was Fort Mims, the other was the Holy Ground where he made his
excape and was supposed to have leaped his horse into the river. Because he was
forced to join the hostiles he had only to make an apearance at Fort Mims. It was
after the massacre that the word was put out he was Chief. Frances and McQueen knew
William was dumb and easy to handle. They also knew the importance of having a Wind
Clan Chief. Now that William was exposed anything they did would be blamed on him.
William could not change sides now. He would be shot on sight. The only thing he
could do was run and hide.
William also said one of the reasons he joined, was they were his people and
he would fight for them. It is true he was at the massacre of Fort Mims, but when
the first shot was fired he left and went down to David Taits to check on his slaves
to see if any had been stolen. The next place he was seen was at the Holy Ground
when he made his escape. The next place was at Callabee Creek where the hostiles
were preparing to attack General Floyd and the Gorgia Army. Again, when the firing
began he was a mile away at Pole Cat Springs. Where did he fight? Where did he show
bravery? Does this sound like a mighty warrior? The only act of the slightest bit of
bravory was when he rode into Jacksons camp and surrendered. And that, only after he
had sent a spy (Savannah Jack) into the camp to scout the situation first.
While reading actual documents you will be suprised at what truths you will
uncover about people written about in history.
