It was said that Louis Hayles owned 600 acres of the finest farm land in Monroe Co., AL, located in the Poplar Springs community. When Louis died he left the entire farm to his grandson, Harmon Hayles, which caused a lot of bitterness in the Hayles family. The other grandchildren felt this was very unfair.

2. MARY JANE3 HAYLES (LOUIS HERMAN2, JOHN1) was born October 17, 1836 in Monroe County, Alabama, and died March 10, 1914 in Monroe County, Alabama. She married WILLIAM D. LAMBERT November 24, 1853 in Monroe County, Alabama, son of JAMES LAMBERT and PHAMEY HANNAH. He was born June 8, 1830 in Monroe County, Alabama, and died September 2, 1911 in Monroe County, Alabama.
Notes for MARY JANE HAYLES:
It is believed that the Lamberts had one other daughter, and that she was burned to death when the family home was destroyed by fire. Many people believed that she was "The Headless Lady" dressed in pure white seen by numerous people in the Mount Pleasant community of Monroe County, Alabama. Most of the time she was seen on the "Old River Road" leading from Mount Pleasant to the Alabama River.
The headless lady was never seen again after the steamboats stopped running around 1925. The Lamberts grandson, Leat Lambert and his wife, Myra, built a home on the site of the Lambert home that burned.

Notes for WILLIAM D. LAMBERT:
William was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. He returned home much wealthier than he left. On his return he carried a burlap bag filled with silver dollars. He never would tell anyone where he got the money. Knowing William as they did, the rest of the family came up with a theory. They knew the Confederate Army was paid in Confederate money, and that the Union Army was paid in silver dollars. They concluded that the only person who would have carried that much money at one time would have been the Union Army Paymaster. So, they decided that William had robbed the Union Paymaster.
The Jones family at Mount Pleasant in Monroe County, Alabama, had to sell their plantation following the war. William purchased the plantation of 1200 acres for 1200 of his silver dollars. He and his wife, Mary Jane, had many relatives in Monroe County, so William moved many of them to the little shacks on his newly acquired property. They did all of the work with little compensation, while William reaped all of the benefits.
A part of this land is still owned by family members.
William gave an acre of land for the first Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Many years later the congregation decided to build a new church on a piece of land several miles from the original church, so they decided to sell the land to help finance the building of the new church. Much to their surprise they found this wasn't possible. William had never deeded the land to the church, and by this time he had died and the land belonged to his heirs. There was a great deal of controversy between the Lambert family and the congregation, but eventually the congregation did get a portion of the money to help build the present day Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. William and his wife, Mary Jane, were charter members of the original church.

Notes for SARAH ANNA LAMBERT:
When her husband died, Sarah was left destitute with her family of young children. She had no means to support them. Her brother, William D. Lambert, moved her and the children to a "little shack" on his large plantation at Mount Pleasant (now Eliska), Alabama.
Sarah and her family lived like peasants, while a short distance away her brother and his family lived like royalty. Most of the time they went hungry, because there was not enough food to go around.
Sarah's two sons, Lee and Bill, worked for their uncle on the plantation, but he paid them very little for their toil. When William butchered hogs, he gave them only the "salt meat" portions of the pork.
One Sunday while William and his family were at church, Bill and Lee went into his house, stole his safe, broke it open and took the money. Their uncle knew they did it, but he couldn't prove it.
Bill and Lee took the money and bought a team of oxen with which they could find work. Later they traded the oxen for the pieces of land where they each lived and raised their families.

6.BROWN3 HAYLES (LOUIS HERMAN2, JOHN1) was born December 10, 1848 in Monroe County, Alabama, and died March 25, 1921 in Monroe County, Alabama. He married EMILY F. LAMBERT February 5, 1876 in Monroe County, Alabama, daughter of JAMES LAMBERT and NANCY HANNAH. She was born March 17, 1854 in Monroe County, Alabama, and died September 2, 1939 in Monroe County, Alabama.
Notes for BROWN HAYLES:
Brown and his wife, Emily, moved from Lovett's Creek in Monroe County with their four oldest children to the plantation of Emily's brother, William D. Lambert. The first house they built burned to the ground due to a fire in the kitchen. When they built the second house, they built the kitchen about 25 feet from the rest of the house with a walkway leading to it.
Brown, as well as the majority of the Hayles, could neither read nor write. After his marriage to Emily, she taught him to read. He was very proud of this accomplishment and was able to read the Bible all of the way through before he died.

Notes for EMILY F. LAMBERT:
When Emily was a small child, the Yankees had invaded the home of her parents and had taken almost everything they had. It was something she never forgot.
It was probably in the 1920's or 1930's, and people traveled by horse and buggy. Some of these people traveled for a long distance, and when nighttime came they would stop at a house and ask if they might spend the night. (There were probably few hotels then.)
Late one evening a gentleman stopped at the home of Emily, and asked her if he might spend the night. Being a gracious and genteel southern lady, Emily told him that he was most welcome to stay in her home. Her son, Henry, who was living with his mother at that time, and her son, Ernest, who was visiting her with his family, helped the gentleman feed his horse and put it in the stable for the night. Then they all sat down to a lovely dinner prepared by Emily. During the meal the conversation turned to the Civil War, and the visiting gentleman mentioned that either his father or his grandfather had been a Union soldier. Emily, who was a soft spoken, Christian lady, leaped to her feet and screamed, "No damn Yankee is going to eat my food. Get out of my house." Her sons were terribly embarrassed by their mother's outburst. They tried to calm her by telling her that it wasn't this gentleman's fault that his ancestor had been a Yankee soldier, but there was no calming her.
As Emily's sons helped the gentleman hitch his horse back to the buggy, they explained to him the terrible ordeal their mother had been through many years before with the Yankee soldiers. The gentleman told them that he understood her feelings and was so sorry to have upset her. He then continued on his way.

Notes for JOHN HOOVER HAYLES:
John Hoover fought in the European Theatre during World War II under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. His job was to drive the gasoline trucks onto the airfield and refuel the airplanes.
When John Hoover returned home from the war, he told everyone he spent most of his time jumping out of the truck and running for cover. Many times while driving along in the truck, he would hear the German planes coming. He would jump out of his truck as fast as possible and run like crazy to the nearest ditch.
Several years after the war, John Hoover was badly injured on his job. He was a paraplegic for the remainder of his life, but he had a wonderful disposition and never seemed to feel sorry for himself.
John died on Thursday, July 17, 1986, at DeKalb General Hospital, Decatur, Georgia.
