1. JAMES L. LAMBERT was born May 30, 1792 in Burke County, Georgia, and died March
16, 1892 in Monroe County, Alabama. He married (1) PHAMEY HANNAH Abt. 1825 in
Monroe County, Alabama, daughter of JOHN HANNAH. She was born Abt. 1805 in Georgia,
and died Abt. 1842 in Monroe County, Alabama. He married (2) NANCY HANNAH December
21, 1843 in Monroe County, Alabama, daughter of JOHN HANNAH. She was born Abt. 1809
in Georgia, and died Aft. 1880 in Monroe County, Alabama. He married (3) SARAH J.
LOFTEN Abt. 1870. She was born Abt. 1832 in Florida.
Notes for JAMES L. LAMBERT:
James owned a cotton gin in the area of Claiborne, Monroe County, Alabama.
The gin was powered by a horse or mule to make steam, and everyone in that
part of the country brought their cotton to him to be ginned.
During the Creek Indian Wars, James served in Boston's Company of the 2nd
Alabama Mounted Volunteers. On 3 Jan 1830, he was commissioned a Lt. in the
26th Volunteer Regiment from Monroe Co., and on 1 Apr 1837, was promoted to
Captain.
James was always referred to as "Captain Jim". At the beginning of the Civil
War he was appointed to a special position in the Confederate Army. Due to
his age he was too old for combat, but his job was to travel around the
country and check on the families of the men who were serving on the
battlefront. James was away from home during most of the War.
After the death of James' first wife, Phamey Hannah, he married her sister,
Nancy Hannah. James and Nancy separated about 1870, and Nancy went to live in
the home of her youngest daughter, Emily Lambert Hayles.

Notes for NANCY HANNAH:
During the Civil War, about 1864, Nancy went through a terrible ordeal in her
life. Her husband was serving in the Confederate Army and was away from home
most of the time, so she and the children were home alone. This particular
year they had all worked so hard. They had raised sweet potatoes and corn.
They had some cows for milk and were raising some hogs to butcher for meat.
One day the Yankees came through and started taking everything they had.
Nancy ran around trying to stop them, but they would only knock her to the
ground and continue to plunder. They also hit some of the children as they
proceeded to take the corn, sweet potatoes, cows and hogs.

Notes for JOHN D. LAMBERT:
John was too young to be drafted in to the Confederate Army. He was
probably about 15 years old. One day during the Civil War, John went to
the store with his father at Claiborne, Alabama. There was a gentleman
in town signing people up for the army. John's father asked him if he
wanted to join, and John replied that he did. Another young man from the
community also joined that day. He and John both left that day to join
the company to which they had been assigned.
When John's father returned home that day from Claiborne, the rest of
the family wanted to know where John was. His father told them that he
had gone off to fight in the war. The family never heard from John or
ever saw him again. When the war was over the other young man returned
home, but John didn't. The family was never notified that John was
killed, and they never could find a trace of him.
John Lambert, Pvt., Company A 42nd AL Infantry, was captured on 25 Nov
1863 at Chattanooga, TN. He died at the Rock Island Military Prison in
Illinois and is buried there.

Notes for JOSEPH FRANKLIN LAMBERT, JR.:
Mr. Frank lived to be a little over a hundred years of age. At
the age of 7 during Reconstruction Days following the Civil War,
he remembered his father's farm being looted by Yankee soldiers,
who had disembarked from a ship at Fort Morgan and were heading
North by foot.
He attributed his long life to "going fishing any time I want."
Perch fishing from a river boat was his favorite method of
indulging in the sport. Primarily a farmer for most of his life,
"Mr. Frank" also timbered for a livelihood once in his youth. He
remembered his grandfather, "Captain Jim", who lived to be 94.
His grandfather had a horse-powered cotton gin which he operated
at a site located north of Uriah between Lovett's Creek and
Randall's Creek. Four horses powered the gins and lint was packed
into bales in screw-type cylindrical presses with hemp rope being
used for bale ties.
Mr. Frank joined the Masons at the age of 25 in the original
Alabama Lodge No. 3 at the then thriving town of Caliborne. He
helped organize the lodge at Uriah and held almost all offices
which the Masons have to offer. He was made an honorary member of
the South Alabama Shrine Club in June, 1952.

Notes for CALFINDA JANE "CAL" BOWDEN:
Calfinda was known to everyone in the community as "Aunt Cal". She plowed a
mule in the fields all day, and then came home to her large family and the
many chores that had to be done.
Aunt Cal was quite an expert on home remedies (medicine), and everyone in the
community depended on her to ease their pain. If anyone in the area was ill,
she went to see them in the evening after her hard day's labor was finished.
If the ill person had no one to sit with them, she would stay and sit with
them all night. Early the next morning, Aunt Cal would be back to her day of
labor in the fields.
It is believed that Aunt Cal was about 5'6" and weighed around 200 pounds.
She could neither read nor write.
