The dog days of summer are here and the flying gets rather soggy. Rain and haze have curtailed much flying on the Eastern Shore and alternate activities have prevailed. I have just returned from a boat delivery from L.I. NY to Cape Charles VA. Believe me, I’d rather have done the trip in my Fisher 505. Even at 55Kts, we would have done better than 9 days on the water.

Jim Rank has spent the week at Oshkosh and should have some great stories to tell at our outing at Ray Sawyers’ next week.

Dave Lumgair has purchased an Aerolite 103 from Ozzie Hilderson and is doing a restoration. He is looking for a gearbox for the 2si engine.

Paul Young soloed just before his July picnic but was too busy doing his famous Pig roast to demonstrate his flying skills.

The July picnic was a resounding success this year with ideal weather and a capacity crowd of people and planes.  Paul and Chris Young are to be commended for the wonderful fare. Many of the members also contributed to the salad and dessert table.

The Fairchild’s, and Gordon Campbell flew into the nearby private 2500’ strip to join the festivities. Gordon treated us with a Tiger flyby and Ted Smith made an exhilarating low pass on his way out flying his Starduster.

We welcomed three new members at the picnic. Cate and Andy Fairchild and Phillip Goldsborough. Phil is interested in learning more about Ultralighting. Cate is president of the Delmarva Aviation Association. She and Andy fly a Cherokee out of Salisbury.

Our August picnic will be Sat Aug 14, 2004 at Ray Sawyers’ field New Church VA He has two runways that can accommodate most small aircraft. A 172 or two have been known to frequent his strip. Call him for info 757-824- 4648.

He also puts on a great picnic with the unsung help of Jeannette Smolinski and his neighbors, the Lewis’s. As usual, contributions to the picnic table of goodies etc are appreciated.

 Dave Lumgair has brought up a possible community service that our members could provide. The local Eastern Shore Hospice has trouble getting to and from Tangier Island. They do free care for those in need and as such have no unlimited funds for Charter flights from MFV. Dave has ferried them to the Island by boat, which can be an uncomfortable and long ride. He is appealing to any pilot who might volunteer a few hours to do a great public service. Flight time to Tangier from ACCOMACK  C. ARPRT. Is only about 20 minutes and they usually visit for about an hour. What better way to spend some time doing what we all love best?  We will have more on this in the future.
