Greetings
unto Mistress Elena de Vexin, Dragon; THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet,
Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of
Heralds; from Lady Angharad Rhos Tewdwr of Pembroke, Escutcheon.
Here are the December 2002
submissions for your consideration and commentary. All submissions will
allow major and minor changes unless otherwise noted. All commentary
should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet,
early enough to arrive by February
25, 2003, with copies
to Dragon and me.
1)Aesa the Fierce. (F) New Name and Device. Vert, within an annulet a wagon argent.
Client supplied no documentation.
She wishes a name authentic for 9th century Norway, cares
most about sound and will NOT accept MAJOR changes. She also will not
allow the creation of a holding name for the associated device.
2) Andrew Bend. (M) New Name and Device. Sable,a bend argent.
[Bend] found in Faire Names for English Folk: Late Sixteenth Century English Names by Chris Laning at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/christian/fairnames/surnames.html#list
[Andrew] found in Masculine Given Names in Chesham, 1538-1600/1 by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan found at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/chesham/chesham-masculine.html
Client cares most about language/culture
and specifically states that he will accept any changes.
3) Balian de Brionne. (M) Device Change. Azure, three clarions argent.
Missive from client:
I desire to change my arms from Per pale argent and azure, three clarions counterchanged (7/93) to Azure, three clarions argent, for obvious reasons. When I registered the current device, I assumed that there was conflict with Per chevron azure and argent, three clarions counterchanged (Robin Clarian, 6/84) because of X.4.d. As I was investigating the question of finding the registrant to seek permission to conflict, Brigantia was kind enough to let me know that he was not sure there was a conflict. He appears to be correct and I cite the following two precedents:
(Daud 1)
(Daud 2.1)
I therefore urge the College
to consider that there are two clear differences between the proposed
arms and those of Robin Clarian: one for the field and one for the change
in tincture to at least half (in this instance the bottommost of three
charges) of the charges.
Client wishes to release his
current device if this passes and also, to release his badge, (Fieldless)
On a rose azure a bee Or.
4) Brise Sanguin. (F) New Name and Device. Gules, a fleur-de-lys argent within a bordure argent goutty de sang.
[Brise] is a female given name listed s,n. Brise la ble in An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris by Lord Colm Dubh found at http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/paris.html
[Sanguin] appears in French
Names from Paris, 1423 by Aryanhwy merch Catmael at http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~sfriedemann/names/paris1423surnames.htm and also in French Names from Paris,
1438 by Aryanhwy merch Catmael at http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~sfriedemann/names/paris1438surnames.htm
Client cares most about sound
and does not require the name to be authentic, wishing at least a vague
cultural connection to France in general and Normandy in particular
sometime during the Hundred Years War between France and England. Client
will NOT allow MAJOR changes.
5) Cecilia Fiametta Delcanto. (F) Name and Device Resubmission. Gules, a squirrel between three bezants.
[Cecilia] found in Withycombe p 30.

[Delcanto] found in Florentine
Renaissance Resources:Online Catasto of 1427 at http://www.stg.brown.edu/projects/catasto/overview.html
Name returned by Rouge Scarpe
9/02 because of a lack of documentation for [Delcanto]. Client has supplied
this. Device was returned same letter for conflict. She has changed
the field tincture (from azure to gules) and changed from plates to
bezants.
6) Cil Choluim, Shire of . Device Resubmission. Purpure, on a chevron between three columbines Or, three laurel wreathes vert.
Previous device submission returned because the columbines were drawn proper and the amount of vert exceeded the amount of Or thus leading to a color on color. The clients have redrawn the columbines all Or clearing this problem. Petition of Support included.
[ Esc: I know the name was bounced on a technical point owing to a miscommunication (not the
fault of the clients)and I believe this was corrected via phone and
the name corrected and passed, but I am unsure what date was assigned
for this correction.]
7) Douglas of Ravenslake. (M) New Name and Device. Quarterly gules and vert, a bull statant Or.
Client has basically created
his own holding name (and wishes it to serve as such) as he wants his
device registered but is still researching his persona. Douglas is his
legal name.
8) Elynor Grey. (F) New Name and Device. Quarterly purpure and vert, a lion dormant erminois.
[Elynor] dated to 1566 found in an index of Female Given Names found in the Ashmolean Museums brass rubbing collection at http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/brasses/women.html

amongst the brasses at http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/brasses/lastnameEH.html. Client wishes a 16th century

was returned 6/02 but I can find no record of it, who returned it, or
for what reason. Client is interested in having an Irish first name
with a Scottish placename.
