Cinema

In loving memory of Sir Alec Guiness 1914-2000

Movies have had a profound effect on my life. Some of my favorites are listed below.

Glory is the story of the 54th regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. This film won a Oscar for best supporting role (Danzel Washington as a runaway slave). Other great performancers in the film include Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and Cary Elwes. Another great thing about this film is James Horner's soundtrack. He used classical orchestra and the Harlem Boys Choir to create a score that is perfect for the movie and enjoyable to listen to by itself.

Apocolypse Now is the finest modern war movie I have ever seen. Francis Ford Coppola created a scary feel for this Vietnam War movie. The film features screen greats such as Martin Sheen, Marlin Brando, Robert Duvall, and Harrison Ford when he was relatively unknown. A good watch if you want a taste of the reality of war.

The Works of Stanley Kubrick Perhaps one of the most enlightened directors af modern film. Ths director brought us such classics as Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Full Metal Jacket, 2001: a Space Oddssey, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, and The Shining. The Kubrick Multimedia Film Guide has pictures and commentary on all of Kubrick's films.

The Crow is the story of a young musician named Eric Draven that is murdered on the night before his wedding. The movie is based off of a comic book by James O'Barr. His fiance Shelly is also murdered and raped before Erick's eyes. Eric comes back from the dead one year later to avenge his murderers and set the wrong things right. The film is set against a very gothic industrial Detroit, where it never stops raining. Besides a great story, The Crow has a good soundtrack and score, and the art direction and sets for the movie are awesome. On a tragic note, the actor that played Eric Draven, Brandon Lee, died during the making of the film. Some of the most beautiful words I have ever heard about love and rememberance came from The Crow:

A building gets torched. All that is left is ashes. I used to think that was true about everything - families, friends, feelings. But now I know that sometimes, if love proves real, two people who are meant to be together, nothing can keep them apart.

An excellent resourse for information about the world of The Crow is A Boy and his Bird. This site contains information about The Crow movies, the television series, and the James O'Barr comics.

The Kevin Smith "Trilogy", Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma are gaining a cult following. Kevin Smith's memorable characters have some of the best dialoge in modern comedy. The View Askewniverse is a web site dedicated to all of Kevin Smith's films and comic books, as well as merchandise, and current news on projects Kevin Smith is working on.

The films of Luc Besson include popular films such as Le Femme Nakita, The Fifth Element, Leon the Proffesional, The Messseger: the Story of Joan of Ark, Atlantis, and The Big Blue. My favorite is Leon the Professional. Information of Luc Bessons films can be found at L'Histoire de Luc Besson.

Monty Python is a British comedy group that released some of the funniest comedy I have ever seen. Monty Pyhton films are still being quoted and memorizes even now, twenty years afterward. MontyPython.net The Ultimate Monty Python Site has loads of information about the Pythons, pics, sound files, actors and current events with the Python crew. Highly recommended.
