The band formed in March/April 2002, with just one guitarist (Rocco) and the bassist (Sean). Then, Jake the drummer was added. To complete the original band, a second guitarist (Charles) was also added. During the time from our forming until May 2003, we practiced only one song... "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. Now, that does sound crazy, but we didn't practice at all over the winter, for about six months at least. Over time, another drummer (Mike) and another guitarist (John) were added. And finally, in April 2003, we began to practice again because the talent show was coming up.

The name came to exist on May 15, 2003. We came into school early that morning to practice for the talent show. We were originally going to call ourselves Better than English (as a take off of Better than Ezra) because five out of the six of us had English during the hour that the talent show was to take place. We had told our English teacher that we were better than English. But on this morning, Zach came up with a better name -- Escaping English. It stuck.

On May 16, 2003, Escaping English had their first performance at the Meads Mill Talent Show. There were two shows: a 6th/7th show and a 6th/8th show. During the first show, we were the first act, and the little kids really didn't understand the point of it, but we got lots of applause. During the second show, we played as the last act. The curtains opened... mucho cheer and applause. We played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and everybody loved it.

Soon after the talent show, we band relieved Charles of his duties as third guitarist because we didn't need a third guitarist.

In January 2004, our drummer Mike moved. Since then we are without a drummer, and are currently looking for one.

We as a band are currently writing our own material in hopes of playing gigs. This process is going very slowly. We are also looking for a drummer now that Mike is no longer with us.
