1. Declaration of Destiny
    ( Unmei No Kohuhaku)

Fifteen year-old high school student Hitomi Kanzaki is in love with Amano, her track team leader. After  a terrifying vision makes her lose consciousness (and her most important race) , Hitomi asks Amano to try again. She asks: " if i can run 100 meters in 13 seconds, will you give me my first kiss?"   Amano accepte , he counts the seconds, using a mysterious pendant Hitomi always carries with her. She nearly completes her run, but a boy, decked in armor holding a sword, abruptly appears in front of her, the boy from her vision.

The boy is Van Fanel, and he don't know where  he is, but if those weird people don't get out of his way, the Dragon pursuing him will surely make short work of them all. When the Dragon appears, Van tells the others to run away and faces the monster. While he is trying to kill it, Hitomi has another vision, where she sees him  getting killed. She warns him, Van dodges and kills the dragon. He then cuts it open and takes out a weird stone. Suddenly, a pillar of light appears, lifting Van and Hitomi off the ground. Amano only has the time to give back the pendant to Hitomi... Who finds herself on a strange world, where both Moon and Earth appear in the sky, That world is Gaea.
Important note before to continue, This is a section full of SPOILERS ! And also, these text are from a magazine called Protoculture Addicts #43, because my english is not that good and  it would have take to much time to resume all the episodes.
2. The girl from the  visionary moon
    (Maboroshi no tsuki  no shoujo)

Van takes Hitomi to the city of Fanelia and, much to her surprise, he is the king of the place. Vargas, Van's sword master and mentor, is rather worried about the rumors concerning the Zaibach Empire and its powerful, unstoppable army and wants Van to be crowned King as fast as possible. However, the coronation ceremony is disrupted by the apparition of a horde of Guymelef using  incredibly advenced weaponry. Van runs to the temple and awakens Fanelia's protector: Escaflowne. With Escaflowne Van is able to contain the enemy Guymelefs, but Vargas is killed and the pillar of light comes again, spiriting Van, Hitomi and Escaflowne away from a ruined and burning Fanelia...
3. The magnificent Knight
       (Karei no kenshi)

Van and Hitomi find themselves in the kingdom of Asturia, where they meet Allen Shezar, an officer of the Asturian Royal Guards, who takes them to a forteress. Shortly after their arrival, Dilando Albatou, a Zaibach knight and leader of the infamous Dragon Corps, visits the forteress and threathens Allen. When Van wants to leave, Alen provokes him in a Guymelef duel, his Scherazade against Escaflowne. Allen wins, but Hitomi panics everyone when she sees the forteress being destroyed...
4. The diabolical young man
      (Mashou no bishonen)

Not long after, Meruru, Van's cat tribe servant and friend, is brought to the forteress. She tells about the destruction of Fanelia and Allen decides  to call back for reinforcements. However, this has no effect when Zaibach attacks. Everybody gets on Allen's ship, the Crusade, and escape. While in flight, they are attacked by Dilando's forces and Van flies away on Escaflowne (in its dragon mode) as a diversion...
5. The seal of the brothers
      (Kyoudai no kokuin)

Van is captured and meets his older brother Folken, who has become one of the Zaibach's leaders. Hitomi tells Allen that she can tell where Van is by using her precognitive powers, but Allen has doubts and ask her to prove it. Hitomi tells him about his past and Allen his convinced.  The Crusade attacks the Zaibach flying fortress and rescue Van. While fighting his way out, he wounds Dilando in the face, driving the already rather unstable Dilando completely bersek. After the rescue operation, the group decides to go to Palas, the capital of Asturia.
6. Metropolis of intrigue
    (Sakubou no miyako)

Crusade makes it safely to Palas. However, Asturia's king Aston is already under Zaibach's influence. Dilando learning that Van is in the city, tries to attacks him by surprise with his Alseides Guymelefs, but misses because of Hitomi's warning. When king Aston learns of Van and Escaflowne, he proposes a fight between Escaflowne and his best Guymelef --- If Van wins, they can go, but if he loses, the king gets Escaflowne! Van accepts. However, when he steps Escaflowne in the arena, there are three Guymelefs waiting for him...
7. Unexpected separation
     (Yokise nu wakare)

Van succeds in beating the three Guymelefs. Later, Hitomi is crushed when she discovers that there is something between Allen and Princess MIllerna Aston. While in her bed, Hitomi is kidnapped by Gecko men. Van rescues her and Dilandau attacks by surprise. Van fights him off and makes his escape with Hitomi, while Allen and the others get away on the Crusade.
