19) Fire in the Belly

No surgeons want to work with Benton because he 'betrayed' Doug. Dale a Sub-I in Trauma arrives, he used to go to college with Harper, they are very friendly. Dale has removed appendixes and lipomas, Carter is jealous.


Susan is treating a very irritable lady with a suspected Heart Attack, she wants everything they are doing to her to be explained. Susan gets angry. Female GSW, Carter is running it. Pulse Oxygen is 40, she has been dead for about three hours Carter calls it. Her young son Jeremy was also brought in, he has said nothing. Boyfriend and mother were arguing, he might have witnessed a murder, call psych.


Earlier Benton sent home a lady without seeing her, she is back. It is her appendix, Benton takes her straight up to the OR. The appendix has burst leaving a big mess. The infomercial director is doing a video of the traumas that come in so they can be reviewed later, she tries to chat up Mark. Carter is desperately trying to find an appendix he can take out, he finds one with an atypical presentation. Hicks agrees and says there has to be a first time. His appendix is normal, the cause of the pain was a toothpick in the terminal ileum, Carter removes it.


The appendix that Benton misdiagnosed crashes in the OR, she is septic (bacteria in the blood stream). Weaver annoys Susan by explaining all the tests to the lady with suspected MI. Jeremy is gone from the exam room, he is looking at the body of his mother.


Parcel for Ross, $25,000 from his father, he is sending it back despite needing to borrow money. Infomercial lady asks Mark out, he says no. Susan's dad tells Susan he will not back her in court, he thinks Chloe and Joe are going to do well, Joe is a Cop. Chloe has been of Drugs and Alcohol for 5 months, the longest ever. She also has a job. Susan is told she will loose a custody fight. In the trauma room, Mark is talking to Doug, he is scared of having sex with someone since he has only ever had sex with Jenn. Doug can't stop laughing. 16 year old beating is due in in 15 minutes, Doug promised Dale he can run it, Carter gets Dale and Harper to go to lunch before going back to the ER to run the Trauma himself. She has a small ice pick puncture in the back, injured the kidney ? bleeding internally. Hicks and Ross are impressed with Carter.


Hicks finds out about Bentons misdiagnoses, Benton admits it was his fault to the husband. The lady is in a critical condition. Susan drops of Little Susie at Chloes, ends up staying for dinner. Joe is nice and Chloe is really good with Little Susie.


Watching the Video of the Trauma from earlier, Carter gets trashed but Dale was perfect. Carrie finds the bit on the tape of Mark talking to Doug about not having sex with anyone other than Jenn, a whole room of people see it, all think it is funny. Doug's loan is rejected. Mark goes out for dinner with the Infomercial lady. Harper dumps Carter, because he is more interested in doing procedures. Jeremy has started talking, his dad was slapping his mum about, Jeremy tried to shoot his dad but missed and killed his mum.


Mark and the Infomercial lady sleep together. On the way home Shep and Carol see a fight, a man breaks Shep's windscreen, Shep beats him up. Benton submits the cases on Vucelichs study that he thinks are fraudulent.

20) Fevers of Unknown Origin

Carol is out with Shep, A water boiler has blown up trapping a 6 year old girl. Carol finds her buried in the rubble, she is not breathing, Hathaway does CPR, she comes round. OK has a reducible Hernia in the groin.


Susan is filling in for someone at work, she is throwing herself into her work after Chloe left last week. Harper is leaving. A blind lady has been mugged, she bit the attackers finger off. Morgenstern wants Carrie and Mark to find a new Chief Resident, Mark recommends Susan Lewis.


Carter finds out that he hasn't done enough Paediatrics to qualify with honours. Carter is to work with Doug, he struggles. Susan is treating a lady who passed out on the crosswalk, he blood pressure is 170/120, she is 21 weeks pregnant and doesn't want to loose another baby. She has been dizzy between pregnancies. Susan does an Ultrasound and finds a mass in the Right Adrenal Gland, she has Conn's Syndrome and is taken to surgery. Both Mark and Weaver are impressed with Susan.


Loretta turns up at the ER, she nearly collapses. She is dehydrated since she has been vomiting due to her Cancer treatment, she also has Radiation burns. Mark is mad at the Oncologist, he does not reply to Marks phone call. Mark meets him in the lift, he doesn't want to know.


Vucelich has published and addendum to his study noting Benton's claims of excluding patients, Bentons letter is returned. Susan is having continual flashbacks about Little Susie. Jenn turns up at the ER, she wants to talk with Mark instead of wasting money on lawyers. The paramedics arrive at an apartment, they are foreign and do not want to say what has happened, it was drug related. Shep pushes over the injured boys friend who is getting in the way, he bangs his head and is knocked out. The injured boy has been shot and is loosing lots of blood, he has many previous scars. He crashes, Ross shocks him, opens chest, crashes again, shocked twice internally before going up to the OR. Riley tells the Doctors that it was Shep who pushed the boy over, the boy needs a head CT Scan. Riley later files and incident report. Weaver thinks that she is going to get the Resident of the year award, Benton gets it, he was nominated by Vucelich.


Mark and Jenn are having dinner, they are sorting everything out and are having a good time. They end up sleeping together. Mr Johnson comes in with the tip of his 'little pinky' missing, he is the blind ladies mugger. Susan and Lydia strap him to the bed before calling the cops in.


Susan goes home to an empty apartment, Chloe, Joe and Little Susie are leaving, they have forgotten Mr B, Susan frantically searches the apartment before Chloe finds Mr B in the Car. Chloe and Little Susie leave.

21) Take These Broken Wings

Susan is seeing a therapist, she is missing Little Susie badly, but is trying to get back into her old routine of work. Al (The Policeman) and Lydia have got engaged. Doug and Karen are out jogging, she falls and hurts her knee, Doug rubs it but they end up kissing. Mark and Weaver are discussing about Dr Lewis becoming attending whilst attending to an attempted suicide who had landed in a freezing lake therefore had to be warmed up before she could be pronounced dead. Mark pronounces him dead.


Susan has a final bill to pay at the nursery, she sees a picture of Little Susies hands on the wall, Susan takes the picture. Loretta is wheeled in on a trolley, she has abdominal pain and vomitting. Shep is in the ER, she is trying to persuade Carol to side with him when the investigators question her about the incident Riley reported. Carol tells him to go away.


TC a ten year old Basketball player is brought in Jaundice. She has had Liver problems since birth and had a shunt put in at 8 weeks of age. She has a tournament on Saturday. Doug orders Liver Function Tests and asks Carter to stay close since she is on her own.


Mark's friend the Video director comes in, she is allergic to cats and is meant to be filming a cat show. Loretta's Kid borrow her video camera. Loretta's kids film the goings on in the ER, they catch Lydia and Al kissing before Carter scares them off. A sixth month old baby girl (Grace Ramsay) is brought in unresponsive, she is not breathing, cyanotic, vomiting earlier, jerking. Carrie orders Susan out of the room.


Ray (Doug's Dad) has taken a lot of Karen (Dougs Girlfriends) money and gone to Mexico. Dougs dad gave 25,000 dollars to Doug. Doug only has 10,000 left he used the other 15,000 to pay for chemotherapy on the diagnosis he missed. Benton and Carter asses TC, she has an Enlarged Liver. She needs a Liver Transplant, and cannot leave hospital until she has had one, which means missing the Basketball game on Saturday. Al Boulet is in hospital, he has a persistent flu, losing weight, Short of Breath and Tired. Carrie does a Chest X-Ray and Bloods. Jeanie see's that Al is in hospital and suspects that an HIV test has been ordered, she rings up the labs to hurry up the results. Hathaway is getting interrogated about Sheps incident, we later learn that the investigation was dropped. Carol sided with Shep, Riley thinks that Shep is dangerous.


Grace Ramsay the 6 month old girl has a Sub-Dural Haemotoma (Blood underneath the outermost covering of the brain), a sign of a battered child. Loretta needs more surgery, her children are staying at Marks tonight. Al (Jeanie's Ex-Husband) has Pneumocystis Pneumonia, (An Atypical Pneumonia typical occuring in HIV positive people). Al is HIV positive and might have been for a number of years, Kerry tells Jeanie that she needs to be tested. Doug admits to Karen that the money his dad stole he gave to him, Doug gives her a check for 25,000 dollars, Karen laughs and says Ray stole over 250,000 dollars.

22) John Carter, M.D.

Jerry is playing funky music in the ER, Weaver doesn't like it and asks them to turn it down. Carrie and Mark are discussing who will become chief resident, Mark still thinks that it should be Susan Lewis.


Little old lady found running round outside completely naked, she is restrained, Susan orders a CBC, Chem 7, Tox screen and non-contrast head CT. She does not know her name, probably has Alzeheimers, call round the nursing homes she is to clean to be homeless.


Staff meeting, Mark is the only person who hasn't voted for Carrie Weaver to become an attending. When asked Mark thinks that Carrie will be a terrific choice, this surprise Morgenstern who thought Mark had reservations about Carrie becoming an attending. Mark has made a deal with Carrie that he will vote for her as attending if she recommends Susan Lewis for the job of Chief Resident. Shep is outside Carols, he is missing his appointment to see the psychiatrist, Carol is worried that Shep will do something awful and that he needs help. Carol admits that she lied for him, Shep is angry, he drives off.


Carter is graduating today, he is trying to persuade Benton to go to his graduation and the party his parents are throwing afterwards. Benton tells Carter that he has his residency and to relax before refusing the invitation. Mark tells Carrie that she got the job as an attending, already Carrie starts to talk about changes she can make to the ER. The staff aren't to pleased about Carrie becoming an attending.


A 2 day old male infant arrives in respiratory distress, Cyanotic with a respiratory rate of 50. He was a Normal full term vaginal delivery and was allowed home after only one night in hospital. He is in heart failure and has Pulmonary Oedema (Fluid in the lungs), mark administers Digoxin (to aid the contracting of the heart muscle) and Lasix (A diuretic to remove some of the fluid). Carol is mad that a newborn baby was allowed home so early, especially when she discovers that he was born there in Cook County General. Jeanie asks Chuny to take a sample of her blood for a HIV test.


Carter goes upstairs to see TC, she is worse and has been moved to Intensive Care. She has been moved up to status 1 for a Liver transplant. The 2 day old is not improving, Doug arrives and diagnosis Hyperplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Doug desperately tries to keep the Ductus Arteiosus open, he succeeds and the baby goes up to cardiology. (The Ductus Arteriosus is a communication between the Pulmonary and Systemic circulation in the foetus, it closes after birth as the babies circulation switches from that needed in the uterus to an adults circulation.) Doug receives a note from a pharmacist, his girlfriend had gone to the pharmacist for a prescription for 100 Percovan, Doug had only written her up for 10. Later Doug confronts her, she gets angry and throws the remainder of the pills back at Doug. The naked little old lady has got free from her restraints and is wondering around the ER singing. Benton and Vucelich meet in the elevator, Benton has read Vucelich's study, he is pleased to see that the negative outcome patients were included even though they did not make a statistically significant difference to the outcome.


TC's parents have rung the ER five times with more questions for Carter about TC's condition and the transplant she will be having. Carter cannot hang around to answer there questions he is due to meet his family for lunch. Carter learns that he is on the Red team next year, Benton will be on the Blue team.


Mark is late for lunch with Jenn, his ex-wife. Jenn tells Mark that she is marrying Greg in September. Mark is not happy. Susan sees Mr Branigan a 46 year old builder with a persistent cough, he has been coughing up blood and smokes a couple of packs of cigarettes a day. Susan suspect Tuberculosis, she gets a chest X-Ray. The X-Ray comes back showing a shadow in the upper left lung suggestive of Cancer (especially with the long smoking history). Mr Branigan does not have insurance and cannot get medicaid. He has kids and a mortgage so cannot afford treatment, he leaves against medical advice. Susan says she cannot do anything about it, again Carol is annoyed how money influences the care that patients are receiving.


Loretta turns up at the ER, she was discharged yesterday after her surgery, she is outside smoking. Loretta asks Mark if he can be the guardian of her children, Mark is honoured but has to refuse. Carter goes up to see TC, she is awake. TC is upset that she is going to die and that something horrible must happen to someone else for her to be able to have a liver transplant. Carters graduation is in half an hour but he stays to comfort TC instead. They play cards.


Mark sees the memo that somebody else has got the job of Chief Resident, he is mad at Carrie, but it turns out that Susan turned the job down. Jeanie finds Peter in the lounge, she tells him that Al is HIV positive. She has been tested but has not got the results yet. Rather bluntly she tells Benton 'we were careful but not that careful, get tested' and leaves the room. Benton is shocked. A 12 year old black girl comes in with a broken ankle after a cycling accident, her ankle is unstable and needs surgery. Her insurance company want to move her to another hospital otherwise they will not pay for the operation. This makes Carol mad and in the heat of the moment she quits.


Carter finds Benton sitting on an OR floor, it turns out that Benton missed his graduation he was doing a emergency haemorroidectomy (removing haemorrhoids !!). Benton tells Carter to take care. Shep is waiting for Carol, Carol says that she has only just got her life together and that she cannot be with Shep unless he gets help. Shep leaves. Carter asks Morgenstern if he can switch to the Blue team (Bentons team). Benton has left a new white coat with 'John Carter M.D.' embroidered on it in the ER for Carter. A RTA arrives and Susan asks Dr Carter if he wants to try out his new coat, he does.
