Story revolves around 3 girls: Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ruuyzaki and Fuu Hoouchi, who were each from different schools.
At a school outing at the Tokyo tower, a blinding white light transported them to the alternate world of Cephiro, where they are destined to become the magic knights, to save Cephiro from the high priest Zagato. Little did they know the tragic story about the pillar, which was to unfold later in the plot.
They were taught by Clef how to use magic, and obtained weapons from Presea in the forest of silence after obtaining the legendary ore Escudo. It was really sad that they were not able to save Presea from the attacks of Zagato's minions. Each of them had their own special magic, Hikaru's one was associalted with fire, such as the flame arrow, Umi's magic was with water, such as the water dragon, and Fuu's magic was with the wind, such as winds of admonishment and winds of healing. Clef was later turned to stone but he left Mokona, a fluffy white creature to assist the magic knights and to communicate with him throughout the journey. They also met Ferio in the forest, who was to help them in fighting the monsters. Ferio had lost his memory at first, but later recalled that he was actually princess emeraude's younger brother. He also gave the magical obb he obtained from emeraude to Fuu, whereby they could use it to communicate easily.
Zagato's minions, such as Ascot, Alcyone and Lafarga tried to stop them but were unsuccessful. The magic knights finally revived the rune guards- rayearth, celest and windam. They would appear whenever the magic knights needed them and called their names.
The final showdown was the battle with Zagato, where the magic knight finally realized that princess emeraude and zagato were actually in love, but they could not be together due to her duties as the pillar. When Zagato was finally killed by the combined powers of the magic knights, princess emeraude begged them to kill her as well, so that she could be with Zagato. With tears streaming from their eyes, the magic knights had no choice but to kill emeraude, otherwise her hatred would destroy the whole of Cephiro. With emeraude's last words " thank you magic knights", the three of them found themselves back in Tokyo Tower again...
My own comments:
The first season was more " childish" in that the characters will suddenly turn ito those small cute sizes and make cute remarks. Also i didn't really like Mokona's voice when it kept on "PUU PUU". It would have been much cuter if it could talk, like the creature in cardcaptor sakura.
Overall, i liked the series a lot. Though its been a pretty old anime already, and most of you would have already watched it...i wouldn't mind watching it again.
I guess what touched me was the morale behink the whole story...should anyone be subjected to the pressure and responsibility of supporting a whole country as the pillar. The pillar cannot fall in love with anyone nor think abt anything else, except pray for the safety of the country everyday...No one deserves to live a life like this
In particular, i liked Hikaru the best of all the three magic knights, actually i thought she looked a bit like sakura (cardcaptor sakura), Well guess i got a lot to learn from her strong will and determination...Once she decided to save Cephiro, she put her whole heart into it and fought her best for each battle. She also used herself to block the attack of the minions when Fuu and Umi were injured....Wow, i hope i can be as strong as her some day....
