Theme: Scientific method (observation and interpretation)

PLO addressed: �distinguish between cells based on their structures and functions�

Objective(s): To learn to make specific observations and to use them to hypothesize about aspects of biological life.

Materials: Large size photocopies of electron microscope (EM) images of different kinds of cells (e.g. plant, animal, bacterial, protist). Optional: cell videos and animations.

Teacher�s Background Info: A cell is made what it is by the specific parts that make it up. Cells having different constituent parts will carry out different tasks and will be suited to different environments. Using knowledge about cell parts and observations of specific cells, it is possible to hypothesize about what the cell can do and in what conditions it lives.

Estimated Time for Activity: 30 min.

Content: Students examine cell images and hypothesize about their observations.
Students work on their own in this activity. Each student is given EMs of different types of cells. S/he must make observations about what cell parts are present in the cell. Then, based on these observations, s/he must hypothesize about the function/habitat of each cell. When all students have completed their hypotheses, teacher gives them more information about each cell. Based on this info, students will change or strengthen their hypotheses. The work they complete is handed in. If there is extra time in the class, videos and/or animations of cells should be shown. The work completed by the students is assessed by the teacher (see below), who provides comments and suggestions. Next class, work is returned to students; they will take them home to create a word-processed report. Report should make use of teacher�s comments and should use information from student research.

Assessment/Evaluation: Teacher assesses initial report: Are observations accurate? Are ideas supported/suggested by observations? Teacher assesses final report: have comments and suggestions been incorporated? Has student done research to strengthen conclusions?
