Michelangelo

Childhood

The second of five brothers, Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, at Caprese, in Tuscany, to Ludovico di Leonardo di Buonarotto Simoni and Francesca Neri.  Even though he was born in the small village of Caprese, Michelangelo always considered himself a son of Florence along with his father.  Michelangelos mother was to sick to nurse him when he was a child so he was sent to a family of stone cutters.  It is said that he chewed on the hammer and chisel while he drank his fosters mothers milk.  When Michelangelo was only six his mother died from a sickness.  His rough young years caused him to lack affection and was said to be often very grim.  He was very touchy and would respond with fierce words.  This caused him to be a lonely boy growing up.  Through all of this his father saw intelligence so he sent him to the best school possible.  Here he learned such things as Latin and painting.  When he got a little older his father expected him to be a businessman and when Michelangelo told him he was not he became enraged.  However Michelangelo went on to study more painting, sculpture, and anatomy.  With his many skills he became good friends with the Medici family. By the time he was in his teen years he had painted several paintings and sculpted many masterpieces.

Family/Social Life

The second of five brothers, Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, at Caprese, in Tuscany, to Ludovico di Leonardo di Buonarotto Simoni and Francesca Neri.  When Michelangelo was still a baby his mother could not take care of him because she was deathly sick.  So he had to live with stone cutters.  When he was six his mother died from the sickness she had been suffering from when Michelangelo was still a baby.  Many say this is why Michelangelo is so grim and unaffectionate.  Growing up Michelangelo did not have many friends due to his grim attitude and his unpredictable attitude.  He did meet and make friends with several of his teachers and advisors.  Such as Francesco Galeota who was his first teacher.  He also became friends with the Medici family because they called upon him often to discuss his many works.  While Florence was in turmoil after the Medici family lost power Michelangelo went and studied many classical paintings and sculptures.  When he returned he sculpted the statue of David which gave him almost instant fame throughout the city.  He also had an arch rival named Leonardo De Vinci who fought continually.

Professional Life

When Michelangelo was a young boy he went and studied under Domenico Ghirlandajo where learned first how to paint.  He then learned how to sculpt under Bertoldo di Giovanni who was a famous sculptor.  His famous works include the 18-foot David in Florence, the Pieta which shows Jesus dead across Marys knees.  It resides in Saint Peters Church in Rome.  These sculptures developed a greater sense of volume and power than any other work of the time and that is why he gained great prestige and honor.  Some of Michelangelos famous paintings are in the Sistine Chapel in Rome.  His paintings depict nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, figures of seven Hebrew prophets, and figures of five female prophets.  Also his paintings at the beginning were more like a sculptors were later the paintings got more artistic.  Another project that he was asked to do was the Julian Tomb.  Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo to build a tomb for him with life sized figures.  Michelangelo could not finish however because Pope Paul died and so the funds ran out.  Before Michelangelo stopped though he did complete a few figures such as Moses. Michelangelo sculpted the tombs for his friends the Medicis.  He sculpted two tombs with life size figures on them.  He also sculpted the walls in which the two tombs were put.  One of his last works was the Last Judgment which was a huge picture on the back of the chapel wall.  The Last Judgment is Christ with blessed figures rising and condemned figures falling.  Before Michelangelo died however he did help design Saint Peters Church.
