The Supermarine Spitfire, in my opinion, is the best fighter plane ever made. The Spitfire was created by a man that went by the name of Reginald Mitchell. Mitchell believed that if he could combine good aerodynamics with the best fighter plane engine that was available on the market, he could create a plane with the ultimate performance. Mitchell applied his ideas to a prototype Spitfire and when the prototype took off on its first test flight, it proved that Mitchell’s ideas were right. Shortly after, Spitfires were put into service for the RAF, and continued to be in service in Great Britain alongside jet fighters until the early 1950’s. Spitfire’s designs were almost always being changed around to meet different requirements. The most common of these requirements was to be a high and low altitude fighter plane. They didn’t have to fighters because to had to be equipped with naval stuff for the English Navy, photo reconnaissance stuff to take pictures over enemy lines, which was probably very scary and risky, and they also had to be equipped with things to fly in tropical areas. Spitfires had a single Rolls-Royce Griffon engine that could power the planes up to a speed of over 439mph. They were also armed with two 20mm cannons - these cannons aren’t the kind of cannons you would see on a boat, these cannons are very powerful and large machine-guns – and two, 0.5-inch machine-guns. During its service in World War II, Spitfires played a very important role in the Battle of Britain. During the battle of Britain, Spitfires patrolled the skies looking for German bombers and any German fighter planes such as the infamous BF109. The British ended up winning the Battle of Britain with a lot of help from the Spitfires maneuverability and its speed. Since the Spitfires were so maneuverable, BF109’s could not get behind Spitfires very well, which made fighting for the Germans very hard. It is even said that when German pilots saw a squadron of Spitfires coming towards them it would cause a panic.
