Another great American plane was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, which the Japanese gave the nick-name of the “Fork-Tailed Devil because of its two rudders on the back of the plane. P-38s contain two powerful Allison engines that could produce a top speed of about 414mph. Since the P-38 was only capable of traveling short distances, it wasn't used as a bomber escort, but instead it was used as a reconnaissance plane, a night-fighter, and a fighter/bomber. When it was used as a bomber it could hold bombs that weighed up to 3,200 pounds. P-38s were also responsible for taking down more Japanese fighter planes than any other plane fighting alongside it or against it in the Pacific Theater. Many people who flew P-38s often drew their girlfriend’s names and pictures on the side of their planes. Major Richard I. Bong and Major Thomas B. McGuire were famous pilots who shot down so many Japanese planes with their P-38s that they became a couple of Americas top-scoring fighter pilot aces. When P-38s did bombing runs over Japan they ended up killing Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the person who coordinated the attack on Pearl Harbor.
