The Me-262 is another German plane that isn’t very well known so I will tell you as much as I can about it. The 262 was the first turbojet plane invented, although the plane itself was finished long before its jet engines were ever completed, so the 262 was equipped with a piston engine located on its nose until the jets were finished. In 1941 the engines were completed and were mounted on the prototypes wings but the piston engine was left on there. During its test flight, the Me-262’s jets failed just after takeoff, so leaving the piston engine on was probably a good idea. After another year of developing the jet engines, the piston engine was taken off which made the 262 rely completely on its jets. The jets were located on the wings. The two jet engines could make the plane go to killer speeds of 800 mph. If I could go that fast I wouldn’t even care if there was another plane behind me, or for that matter, anything in the world because I could just fly away into the sunset or turn around and flank it and blow it out of the sky and never get hit by enemy fire. The Me-262 was put into mass production by Hitler in late 1943, after about four years of work on the two revolutionary jet engines. Even though the Me-262 were in mass production, less than 300 of over 1,400 planes ever saw combat in the air over Europe. This was mainly because of American bomber raids over Germany, which destroyed many planes on the ground. The 262’s were originally supposed to be fighters, but Hitler insisted that they be converted into bomber planes, which resulted in the destruction of almost all of the planes destroyed on the ground during American air raids. Some people think that if the Me-262’s were put into production earlier the outcome of World War II would have dramatically changed, so it’s a good thing they came out when they did or our world would be in a disaster.
