Musicians: (not yet available) Notes from Russell Parkinson: This Pacific High Studios material has been frequently booted. It is reviewed in full below. The material also appears (in whole or in part) on a number of other boots, including Fridays Child, I've Been Working, Into the Mystic, Moonshine Whiskey, This is Van Morrison, Desert Land, Van Morrison, Wild Night in California, and the vinyl Van the Man. Check the other Discography entries for additional details on a specific bootleg. On all of these the sound is fine. The Inner Mystic and Moonshine Whiskey have a crisper sound generally but have some marked tape hiss on the S's. I've Been Working and Wild Night in California don't but the sound is a little less sharp and there is more background noise/hiss. I can't comment on the sound quality of the other boots from this show I have listed. I find the duller sound without the S hiss preferable myself but others may not. A tip here for those with The Inner Mystic etc. The worst of the S hiss is only on one channel. The show is in mono so simply tape the better channel using the right sort of stereo/mono cable and you end up with a better sound. Review by Russell Parkinson: This show was recorded live in the studio before a small audience. The band is essentially the Caledonia Soul Orchestra. This show is probably the most booted recording out there and for good reason. Van is on fire from the very start with a slow burning "Into the Mystic" which is in my books, the best version I've heard. A frantic "I've Been Working" is next. Six minutes of pure funk ending with Van whispering "you send me" to a fade out. Awesome and once again, the best version of this song there is. The small audience couldn't have believed their luck to strike Van on this sort of form. To reinforce this Van strikes out with a wonderful version of the Them song "Fridays Child" and follows it up with Elvis Presleys "Hound Dog". Van doesn't quite bring the sexual innuendo that Elvis does to this song but it rocks and is a lot of fun. Just in case the audience thinks they're at some sort of rock 'n roll show Van slows the whole thing down with a delicious "Ballerina". This is the definitive version of this great song in my book and even after eight minutes you don't want it to end. End it does but to ease the pain is a beautiful "Tupelo Honey" to take you away again. By the time the band are harmonizing "she's an angel" over and over again the eyes are closed and this listener is in heaven. A revved up "Wild Night" is next and then Van floors us all with an intense cover of Dylan's "Just Like a Woman". Van takes it right down and brings it right up again, improvises lyrics and what results is one of the greatest cover recordings ever. Van even planned to release it commercially in the mid-seventies but it never happened. Van changes tempo again and gives us a lively "Moonshine Whiskey" from the "Tupelo Honey" album. This has more punch than the album version and is another treat in night full of them. Watch them bubbles in the water! A swinging "Dead or Alive" is next. Van and Lonnie Donnegan recently performed this at one of the Brighton shows. It's a great old song and suits the mood of the show to a tee. A pretty straight forward "You're My Woman" from Tupelo Honey follows before Van rips into an up-tempo "These Dreams of You". This leads into a trio of tracks from the His Band and the Street Choir album. "Domino" is the first and the best of these. This song really rocks and at the end the tempo gets faster and faster until it reaches a frenzied climax. Again this is probably the best version of this song I've heard. Only the Montreux 1990 performance where Van integrates "The Midnight Hour" is any competition. "Call Me Up in Dreamland" and "Blue Money" are fine performances but are essentially weaker songs and don't reach the heights of "Domino". A bluesy almost honky-tonk "Bring It On Home" is next. Quite different from the slow soul of the It's Too Late To Stop Now show but still a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyable. Van finishes the show with the old classic "Buena Sera". Jeff Labes adds some delicious piano, everyone has a laugh and a good time and the show is over. Wow! RATING - ESSENTIAL!!!!! Only a couple of minor tracks from Street Choir don't rate as all time classics but they still sound fine. Everything else is great. This really should have been released commercially.
Mystery Filler: There is some subpar audio filler added to this, dont know the source. Includes a real funky version of I've Been Working and an interview in which Van talks about spending some time in a monestary to get away for falseness of the pop scene.

Notes:
There were acetates made of a 3 record set of It's Too Late To Stop Now. When the choice was made to make it a 2 record set, the above tracks were left off. (The last four tracks on this boot are taken from Montreaux 1974).
Review by Eric Gerber:
The sound quality of this boot is impeccable. I don't have the other boots that are this same show [Ed: often referred to as the It's Too Late To Stop Now acetates - see It Ain't Why, It Just Is and Its Never Too Late], but the sound and the quality of performance are first rate. There are no liner notes to speak of, just a color picture on the cover. It does not list the musicians, but I'm sure the info is available on the other boots of the same show. There is a misprint on the spine of the case, which I guess makes this one a rarity - it says, "Bruce Springsteen - Wild Night".

From the liner notes: The Lion's Share broadcast from San Anselmo,CA is one of the great treasures prized by Morrison collectors. It is also one of the most difficult to find complete in excellent quality. The broadcast on a low power Berkeley station [ed: see notes below] limited the reception area. Even worse, the Bay Area was rocked by a winter storm on broadcast night which not only interfered but interfered in different locations at different times. For the first time on disc, the complete two set Lion's Share Show is now in excellent quality pieced together from three sources for the cleanest tape possible. The effort is well worth it for the rarities the listener is treated to. With jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi sitting in , Van opts for a looser sound and a number of unique performances. Check out the wordless scat singing on "Into The Mystic" as well as the long instrumental breaks. Van sings both the verses and scats on a one time performance of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" from the movie "Midnight Cowboy". The Lenny Welch classic "Since I Fell For You" received two treatments: the first Van plays it straight while the second is an extended jazzy version with Van's most impassioned singing of the night. Other unique treats are the World War II era "White Cliffs of Dover", Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin'" and a lovely version of the Johnny Mathis hit "Misty". Among the regular songs of this era, the most compelling is "Listen to the Lion" in which Van implores us to "listen to the lion inside of me". Amen.
Additional information from Paul Grosso: Just for the record, the broadcast was on KPFA - it's a non-commercial station but certainly not low power. It's actually heard all over the Bay Area and has repeaters feeding their signal all the way down to Monterey. Unless my brain cells fail me, I believe that KTIM in Marin County also broadcast a live feed of the broadcast. KTIM was a commercial "underground" station where I was a disk jockey during this period. Additional information from Mike Burns: During "Hard Nose the Highway", in the early show, Van namechecks the following musicians: Brother Jack Schroer: saxophone Jeff Labes: piano Doug Messenger: guitar Marty David: bass Rick Shlosser: drums Sound quality IS an improvement over that of Stormy Weather in San Anselmo, even if there is occasional hiss. The CD's and the back liner have a lion's head as background - a nice presentation touch. An essential boot, in my opinion.

Review from Steve: All [the above 4] CDs are of reasonable quality for live recordings. The best for rare recordings is "If You Don't Like It, Go Fuck Yourself" - This title has come from a line near the end of the CD. Spoken by Van Morrison in reply to someone in the audience who seems to disagree with Van taking a long time to return for an encore (about 3-4 minutes of clapping) and gets up on the stage himself - Van Morrison replies "If You Don't Like It, Go Fuck Yourself". Also released as Pure (Multi Coloured Music, LLRCD 144, Italy) with one additional track: "Send in the Clowns" performed with Chet Baker. The liner notes claim that it was recorded in 1968, the location is not listed. Musicians: Van Morrison: vocals Chet Baker: trumpet Michel Grailler: piano Ricardo Del Fra: bass

But I'll Go On). The "I Will Be There", "Jackie Wilson" and "St. Dominic's" trio are all great versions; additionally, this set features my favorite "Vanlose Stairway" and "Ballerina" boot renditions. The sound is superb: on a par with Down By Avalon and Edinburgh Castle.

The cover shows tracks 1 and 2 on disc two reversed. See also the notes in the Discography entry for St. Patrick's Day for more information on the Greek Theatre material. Liner notes: One of Van's finest concert tours was the short-lived tour of America in July 1986 with his regular band augmented by a string quartet. This tour highlighted the balladic side of Van. Highlights were the poignant "Got To Get Back", the aptly titled "Haunts of Ancient Peace" with the quartet into "Lark Ascending", the anthemic "In The Garden", and the gorgeous "Rave On John Donne". The concert was taped by a Berkeley station which put together a broadcast with narration by Huey Lewis but never aired it! Portions of this concert were later used in European broadcast remixed for the CD format. From the combined sources of the original production tape and the CD for the subsequent broadcast we present for the first time the complete concert. To complete this release we include a short but complete (NOT - SEE MONTREUX 1980 FOR THE FULL SHOW) Montreux broadcast featuring a rousing "Troubadors" and the hypnotic "Angielou". Finally, we include another great mid-80's original as well as a heartbreaking cover of Ray Charles' classic "What Would I Do".

It was recorded in 1988 from concerts with the Chieftains in Ireland and contains most of the stuff from Irish Heartbeat. [It contains a] version of "Moondance" - as an *IRISH JIG*. Yes that's right. I couldn't believe it. It sounded just like an ordinary jig until I heard the words. I didn't think that he could still find anything new in the song, the way he plays it in concert recently, but this just blew me away. Also a version of "Send In the Clowns" in which he actually sings it for real, no clowning around, no long pauses, no nothing. Just Van singing a great song as if he means it. (This track is not from the Chieftains concert, but comes from Ronnie Scott's club in 1986)

Liner Notes: Recorded Live in Montreux, Switzerland, July 1990, featuring special guest Georgie Fame.
Review from Russell Parkinson: Also booted on Down by Avalon. Live in Montreux has Georgie Fame singing "Yeh Yeh" while Down by Avalon doesn't. The sound quality is very good soundboard/FM. The show opens with Georgie Fame doing an excellent "Yeh Yeh". Van comes on and does "Did Ye Get Healed" and then "Its All in the Game". Both pretty similar to the Night in San Francisco CD but a bit longer and not so rushed. Van throws in a very short part of "I'm Ready" into "Its All in the Game". This was one of the tracks omitted from The Philosophers Stone. Next Van launches into a lively "Here Comes the Night" followed by "Baby Please Don't Go". The band is hot and Georgie's back up singing is great. It sounds like everyone was on this night. "Domino" is great and runs nicely into "Midnight Hour". This is one of the best "Domino"s I've heard. Although not as frantic as the Pacific High version, the inclusion of "Midnight Hour" adds something special. A joyous "Jackie Wilson Said" is next and it sounds like Van and the band are having a great time. What follows must have stunned the audience. With Steve Gregory on flute Van sings a glorious "Sweet Thing". A lot slower than previous live versions this song floats along and then seams nicely into "Astral Weeks" before returning back to "Sweet Thing". The song finishes with a little mantra that I think comes from the Common One album. Like me many van fans probably thought van had to be in some sort of mystical muse to sing and perform like this, but as easily as he swung from "Jackie Wilson Said" to "Sweet Thing", he swings back to perform a laughing bouncy "Star of the County Down". Its almost like "Sweet Thing" didn't happen, or maybe the man can just turn it on at will. After "Star of the County Down" a slower "Northern Muse" starts. This then changes to "Auld Lang Syne", "No Prima Donna" and finishes with "When Heart is Open". Great stuff. "Whenever God Shine His Light" is certainly not one of my Van favorites but this version really goes. It bounces along, has bits of "Take Me Back" and finishes with "Spirit", which is probably appropriate. And I could swear that van changes ""when you've given up hope..." to "when you've given up POPE." "Summertime in England" is awesome. At 13 minutes its one of the longer versions around. It is very similar to the Pagan Streams version but is seamless and doesn't have the chatter. Van adds "A Town Called Paradise", "Take Me Back" and "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" to the formula. "Caravan" is the first encore. It's a fine version with Van lecturing on the benefits of Bovril and Horlicks. The show ends with a lovely "In The Garden". No fancy stuff here, just a fine version to end a great show. RATING: Essential, awesome, flawless. Quite possibly the best boot there is.

Recorded at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in August 1995
Review from [email protected]:
This is as close to a legit release as Live In Montreux on Swinging Pig was back in the early 90s.
As you all are aware, VM played at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in August 95 and the show was broadcast in Europe - BBC. Van was backed by the BBC Orchestra Big Band.
I heartily recommend this disc. It is obviously taken from a good FM source tape and is in full pristine stereo sound. The packaging is first-rate; looks like whoever did the graphic arts layout was familiar with Van's famous quote "I don't care if you're red, yellow, blue..." as the packaging has "red, yellow, blue" as the background (much as A Night In San Francisco <sanfrancisco.html> had "Blues, Ballads, Soul, Jazz" as the background art on the back of the CD). The disc is a picture disc and has photos of Van from a few years ago. (Not the black outfit but the vest and the longer hair on the sides and the Ray Ban aviator shades - circa 1991?)
Dave Wilson reports that he "was at that concert and it was quite a night - for all the wrong reasons. Now I have seen Van maybe 12 times and been moved by his performance 90% of the time but on this night he was quite clearly not happy, most likely with the BBC big band who were backing him! You will notice the CD is only over 40 min long - that is all the Man played! He walked off the stage leaving bewildered musicians to wait for his return - which never happened. And somehow I admire him for it!"

This 2-CD set includes the complete FM broadcast from The Point Theater, Dublin on December 17th, 1995 Notes: The quality is reported to be absolutely stunning - better than some of Van's commercial live records. It's a limited edition set - copies appear to be individually numbered - limited run of 250. It has a total running time of just under two hours. Sound really is sensational. The package is described as 'classy'. Review by Niall Connors: Given that the 17.Dec.95 show from The Point Depot in dear, dirty Dublin was captured four years back on The Night Was Full Of Space boot, it was noteworthy how much "press" the soon-to-be-circulated From Dublin Up To Sandy Row received in the Van-List circles. Well, the hype was worth it. While the sound on NWFOS is solid, the sound on FDUTSR is flawless; in my opinion, it is better than on the live commercial release, A Night In San Francisco. This is the third Van show of which I am aware that the Tonight Only label has released, and they seem to know they had something special here. A couple of blurbs from the very sharp artwork: "Tonight Only is proud to present the definitive recording of one of the definitive Van Morrison concerts of the 1990's . . . .The pristine recording you hold in your hands is released with a very limited pressing of just 250 copies, each one numbered to enhance its value as a rare record of a spectacular concert at Dublin's Point Depot." The setlist speaks for itself, and Van's performance is simply "on"; even "Moondance" works! But the value of this recording is the sound, which has a richness and complexity, as well as subtlety, that TNWFOS lacks. Guy Barker's sax solo on "That's Life" absolutely shimmers, and one can literally feel Alec Dankworth's fingers on the up-right bass during "Why Must I Always Explain". I have no affiliation with Tonight Only, so I can say without influence that this is a classic boot.

All songs recorded at The Forum in Leverkusen, Germany on 18/10/96, where Van guested with the Candy Dulfer Band. Tracks 6-9 also feature Mavis Staples.
Notes: Van-L list member Dave Linn thinks that this must be a soundboard recording. "Its one of the best ones out there that I've heard, and playing with both Candy Dulfer, and Mavis Staples had Van in a playful mood. Its a wonderful recording of a wonderful fun performance. Highly recommended".
From Van-L list member Cuttsy:
The rather drab and unexciting artwork of this CD suggests nothing of the delights which lie within. I like this boot a lot although its disappointingly short at just less than an hour. The sound is excellent probably from an FM stereo radio broadcast or perhaps from the Rockplast TV broadcast in Germany. The charm of this boot is that Van is unhomed, playing with the Candy Dulfer Band. Which results in a different sound from many other recent performances. VTM is in good voice and Candy Duffer's sax excellent. Addition of Mavis staples vocals to this makes for something a little special. The performance varies from a punchy funky sound to real soul and blues. For me "Your Mind Is On Vacation" and "I'll Take Care of You", stand out. The latter at times is so laid back its almost horizontal. "Vanlose" is great with fine sax from Candy, lovely guitar solo, Van in Yoh-del-eh mood and culminating in a no-holds-barred "TET". Ace. Of the boots I've heard this is one of my favourites, on a par with Edinburgh Castle <edinburgh2.html> .

Review by Jon Strand: Soundboard recording with great separation between voices and the various instruments. Van and everyone are in great voice (I have never heard Brian Kennedy stronger and more soulful. Actually, I've never connected Brian Kennedy with "soulful" before, but it's certainly true here.) The horns play wonderfully throughout, both on solos and ensemble work. The whole band is very tight (and loose.) Very "on:" Van calling out the song titles to the band. Dedicating "That's Life" to Frank Sinatra ("lest we forget.") "Whenever God Shines His Light" becomes "Whenever (Sir) Cliff Shines His Light." Great intro to "Man's World." This is one of the live CDs that make you keep looking for others out there. A great performance, well captured. Notes: If you have Nights Of The Living Icons, you can hear the same performance of "Fire In The Belly," but from the audience point of view. This CD is not to be confused with On the Burning Ground (Randall's Island, New York City, June 14, 1997).

Source: The Rockpalast Christmas Special, broadcast from Dusseldorf, Germany on December 19, 1998
Notes: Reported (by the seller!) to be "an excellent soundboard recording". Review by Niall Connors: Van's show at the Rockpalast Christmas Show in Dusseldorf on 19-Dec-98 will likely go down as one of Van's most famous concerts: it was broadcast live; it is an excellent show; the band was buttressed by Candy Dulfer and Fred Wesley. The Internet quickly spread the gospel of this show's contents, and that same Internet helped to spread quite quickly excellent videotape and audiotapes (as well as CDRs) of the performance. So, was there a need for me to splurge for The Polar Bear boot of the show, which Polar Bear claims to be a "soundboard" recording? No. Did I? Absolutely. As even my wife contents, my Van hobby may be expensive, but is quite benign in the face of other "hobbies" that are out there. While I am not an audiophile, to my ear this is a soundboard recording, and it is a notch above the excellent FM recordings that are available through the Van-List and Van-Trades folks. Katie Kissoon's background vocals are extremely clear and the instrument's contribution is felt both individually and collectively. A superb recording of a great show.

Notes: [Reported to be] "a new deluxe 3CD set from the Scorpio label, that will bring together material from the 1964-75 period. The bulk of the material is studio demos/outakes, but there are selected live tracks as well. The majority of the material has never been bootlegged before, or even circulated in tape collectors circles. The packaging will be of a very high standard (this label has put out Bob Dylan and The Band material in this "Genuine" series with great results) with a beautiful colour fold out cover and a nice booklet with sleeve notes and contemporary interviews, as well as loads of great photos and rare record sleeves. This will stand as probably the most important "unofficial" Van Morrison release to date!" Review: Art work is great, very unusual pictures of Van. Each disc is in a slip disc (w/photos) and the whole is in a cardboard holder which opens up to three panels. There is also an interview booklet with photos included.
