Consider Karlsbad 1907 International Chess Tournament ( Caissa Editions 2007, PO Box 151, Yorklyn, DE 19736, 451 pages, hardback, algebraic notation, $55 plus $4 postage). This classic tournament book edited by Carl Schlechter and George Marco has finally been translated into English by Robert Sherwood. Karlsbad was one of the strongest tournaments of its time with only Lasker and Tarrasch missing and was a great triumph for Rubinstein who won the 21 player round robin with 15 points, just ahead of Maroczy at 14 �. The book chronicling it has always been considered a classic as Marco and Schlechter were considered excellent annotators and the former especially adept at capturing the atmosphere of a tournament. Their work is enhanced by Sherwood who has used the computer program Rybka to check their analysis. Besides a clean two column format, multiple indexes, and a sturdy hardback binding Karlsbad 1907 International Chess Tournament also has some very nice photos. In particular I have never seen the photograph on page 397 of Rubinstein and Maroczy in the presence of the great patron Victor Tietz. Highly Recommended |
