Discovered Attack
A discovered attack is a powerful tactic in which a piece lies in hiding to ambush an enemy piece, and when another piece is moved, the attack is exposed. In this game, Fischer demonstrates the force of a discovered attack on move 18.

1.e4 e6 2.d3 d5 3.Nd2 c5 4.g3 Nf6 5.Bg2 Be7 6.Ngf3 O-O 7.O-O Nc6 8.Re1 Qc7 9.e5 Nd7 10.Qe2 b5 11.h4 a5 12.Nf1 Nd4 Black opens the c-file in order to attack White's backward c-pawn. One drawback is that the pawn on d4 is permanently weak. 13.Nxd4 cxd4 14.Bf4 With this Bishop on the same diagonal as his Queen, Black must watch out for tactics beginning with Bxd5. 14...Ra6 15.Nh2 15.Bxd5 is not effective due to 15...Bb4 16.Reb1 (worse is 16.Rfc1 because of 16...exd5 17.e6 Rxe6 18.Qxe6 Qxf4 19.Qxd7 Qxc1+ winning.) 16...exd5 17.e6 Bd6 18.exd7 Bxd7 with an equal position. 15...Rc6 16.Rac1 Ba6 Necessary was 16...Qb6. Now the tactic works. 17.Bxd5 exd5 Black could offer more resistance with 17...Rc5 18.Be4 Rc8 (if 18...Nxe5, then 19.c3 threatening 20.cxd4) 19.Nf3 Rxc2 20.Rxc2 Qxc2 21.Nxd4 Qxe2 22.Nxe2 Nc5. 18.e6 Advancing the pawn exposed the Black Queen to a discovered attack from White's Bishop. This allows White win back the sacrificed piece and to open up the position for an attack. 18...Qd8 If 18...Bd6, then 19.Bxd6 Rxd6 20.exd7 Qxd7 21.Nf3 and Black cannot defend his pawn on d4. 19.exd7 Re6 20.Qg4 f5 If 20...Qxd7, then 21.Be5 wins easily. The text move weakens the e5 square which White will later use for his pieces. 21.Qh5 Qxd7 22.Nf3 g6 23.Qh6 Bf6 24.Rxe6 Qxe6 28.Be5 Bxe5 26.Re1 f4 27.Rxe5 Qd7 28.h5 fxg3 29.hxg6 gxf2+ If 29...Rxf3, then 30.Re8+ Qxe8 31.Qxh7+ Kf8 32.g7+ and 33.g8=Q+. 30.Kxf2 hxg6 31.Qxg6+ Kh8 32.Rh5+ 1-0
