StatisticsDeer are found all over the United States. I don't know where the least amount of deer are but I do know that Texas has the biggest herd consisting of over 3.2 million deer!!! I'm from Florida and I hunt in Ocala. In Ocala, there was 567 deer taken (legally). Thats not alot considering the state of Florida had an estimated 88,000 deer taken in the year 2000. Florida does not keep track of thier herd size. In 1997, there was approximately 200,000 hunters in the state of Florida. This year there is an estimated 60,000 hunters in the state. Hunters are scarce because no one agrees with what they do, yet all the money that is used to purchase the hunting liscenses goes to land management and animal protection (poachers and loss of shelter). For all those nature lovers, you should thank the hunter's and purchase a hunting liscense. Even though you may not hunt, purchase one anyway, because you will also protect the outdoors we all love. |
General InfoWhite-tailed deer are very intelligent animals. They can remember danger and avoid areas of caution. Deer have excellent senses. They can smell humans or other unwanted animals miles away. They are colorblind but can hear pretty much anything in about a mile radius. Be sure you keep this in mind if your hunting with an airhorn or some kerosene. A deer's antlers will not tell you how old or mature a buck is, but tell you how much protein they are getting. Up north they have an excellent source of nutrition where as the south doesn't. Deer eat alot of different things. They eat grass, leaves, bark, twigs, and the tender sprouts of trees and other plants. They also eat moss and plants called lichens. Deer do not chew their food "well" before swallowing it. |
