| Importance of regular exercise and the foot of the horse | |||
| Occasionally, our horses get stocked up. This is due to swelling caused by excess collection of blood in the legs. The horse needs to move around for proper circulation of the blood in his or her legs. The foot is the most important part of this process, acting as a hydraulic cushion.
When the horse steps down, the heel expands. This compresses the digital cushion and the lateral cartilage expands. The cartilage presses out on the coronary corium locking the blood in the hoof, which acts as the hydraulic cushion. Once he or she lifts the foot, the hydraulic pressure is released, which forces the blood back up the leg. |
