| What Belongs in a Deluxe Reading Kitchen? |

| Barbie Bazaar and Millers Magazine have run articles on this popular playset from 1963; both examined very hard to find (VHTF) kitchens in never removed from box (NRFB) condition. Some of the original kitchen parts varied in number and color, but here is as complete a list as I can compile using all the available sources. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| First, there is the paperwork. The box included a large instruction sheet, a product warranty, and a brochure about Deluxe Reading's toys. There were also smaller instruction sheets on the stove and sink, but these are not pictured here. |

| A pink sink unit with a yellow backsplash and a turquoise cupboard. The back of the sink has two slim black plastic water tanks (top and bottom). On the backsplash, a chrome towel/foil paper "comtainer" slides back and forth to control the water flow. There should be two knobs and a faucet. Inside the bottom left door (under the sink) is a towel rack with a terrycloth dishtowel (I have seen yellow and pink towels, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were other colors), and a red sponge--which has always disintegrated into red powder. A yellow plastic dishdrainer fits in one side of the sink. |

| The brown dishwasher has a pink backsplash and brown cupboards. The white top (and the white tops of the stove and sink) have sometimes yellowed. The dishwasher also has black plastic water tanks in back, but the bottom tank is bigger than any of the other tanks. Inside the diswasher is a clear plastic rack that slides out and holds the dishes being washed. The large center knob controls the flow of water, and above that, on the backsplash, is a chrome utensil rack that should hold six large plastic-chrome utensils (pictured just ablove): a serving spoon (ladle), serving fork, serving knife, slotted spoon, cake server, and spatula. |

| The yellow stove has a brown backsplash and pink cupboards. On the backsplash is a chrome-plastic pot rack that hold four pots and pans. The pots and pans included two large frying pans, one small frying pan, two large sauce pans, one small sauce pan, and a Dutch oven with a lid. If you pulled the little lip located just under the stove door, the burners would light up, and if you continued to pull, the rotissere would spin. A turkey should be on the rotissere. There should be six knobs and a clock. |

| The turquoise 'fridge has yellow cupboards, and inside there are two metal swing-out-shelves, three plastic-chrome inside-the-door shelves, plus a butter compartment that opens. Two clear plastic vegetable bins fit under the bottom swing-out-shelf. In the freezer there should be two plastic-chrome ice cube trays filled with removable plastic ice cubes (pictured with the pots and pans above). The freezer also has two inside-the-door chrome-plastic shelves. |

| Furniture: The only other "big" pieces in this set were the rectangular white plastic kitchen table and its four chairs: one in each of the appliance colors. |
