The Fish...
We needed some "impartial observers" in a few scenes, just some innocent bystanders who were also willing to sing back-up for the various leads. Our most pressing problem was who was going to sing with Gollum in one of his songs? So we came up with some Fish who live deep in the Misty Mountains and share Gollum's cave with him. But as the story progressed, the Fish became more and more useful, until they sang back-up in several songs, and even had a few solos.
They turn up everywhere there's a body of water: the Misty Mountains, Isengard, Ithilien, and even places like the Emyn Muil, Rohan, and Gondor, where there is no water. You may well ask how they travel from place to place, and how they can be singing in the Golden Hall or on top of a mountain. The answer is plain and simple: they are Fish. They are omnipresent. Kind of like gods, only...not.
They're nothing even remotely Tolkienesque, and if Tolkien knew about them, he'd probably take Gimli's axe to us. But there they are. They're Fish. Love them. Fear them. Bask in the utter randomness.
