In school, I always had a hard time. Constantly the target of bullies, I almost never had any peace during recess and lunch times. My grades werent too bad, Bs and Cs made my world go round. It was just the social environment that bothered me. I only had two close friends in my childhood. One of them lived next door and the other lived half a mile away from our houses. We always traveled together when we werent with our families. We were a trio that could defend ourselves from trouble.
My family consisted of me, my mother, my father and my two older brothers. We lived on the poverty side of the city. Rich people never spared a single penny for us, so we had to work hard everyday to keep up with the bills and the essentials. I didnt have a lot of material things, but I didnt care about that too much. I had my loving family and my loyal friends. When I was a freshman in high school, my oldest brother was serving in the army and my other older brother was in college to become a lawyer. My father got a new, decent-paying job as a car salesman and my mother got a promotion in her retail job as a cashier. With enough money, my parents and I moved out of Detroit and moved in to Philadelphia. We had a nice two bedroom and one bathroom house, and the environment was safe and comfortable. Nothing could go wrong, right? If only...
When I was sixteen, I met a young man who was in my business class. He had blonde hair and blue eyes, oh, he was gorgeous. He was also rich, but that didnt matter to me too much. It was the first time I had a crush on a boy. I had butterflies in my stomach every time I saw him. He had the reputation of being a ladies man, but once he asked me out on a date, he stopped spending a lot of time flirting with other girls. I think I was the first girl that made him committed. He really liked me, just like I really liked him. We kissed on our first date, and at that moment, I knew he was the one for me.
However, my family didnt like him. Hes a rich kid and a troublemaker; hes nothing but bad news! My mother and father demanded that I never see him again. It hurt me, but I was determined. One night, I talked to him on the phone and asked him to meet me in our high schools courtyard. I snuck out of the house and ran away without anyones knowledge. We met up where we agreed to find each other and I told him that my parents didnt want me seeing him again. But we were young, we were stubborn, we did what we wanted to do. The next thing I knew, we were both in the back of his car...
One week later, I found out I was pregnant. We were so careful, and yet... I couldnt believe it, I didnt want to believe it. I met up with the boy I loved and told him, hoping he would help me through this stressful time. Unfortunately, he berated me, turned and walked away. My heart was betrayed. I had never felt so dead in my life. I thought nothing could get worse, but when I told my parents, things went to hell. Rather than support me through my critical time of need, they disowned me. I was a sixteen year old teenage mother in the middle of Philly. There was nothing good about it. My parents would no longer pay for my room or anything that was apart of it. I had to pay or else I would be kicked out.
Being pregnant, working and going to school was one of the worst things I had to do in my life. I had the options of getting an abortion or giving up the baby for adoption after giving birth. When I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl at age seventeen, I made an alternate decision. I decided to keep her and raise her in this hectic world, naming her Rosalyn. I would be a good mother and give her everything she needed in life. I refused to give up. The day I barely graduated with my high school diploma, I went home with my daughter and found all of our belongings dumped outside. We were on our own moving back to Detroit, but we were strong. College was out of the question, but I didnt care. I worked hard for the both of us and we managed to push through the toughest obstacles yet.
Now Im twenty nine years old and Rosalyns twelve years old. Now I can show the world who I am and what Im all about, starting with eWo.
