| Holding hands, Ron and Hermione prepared to step through the portrait hole into the Gryfindor common room, but the sight that greeted then made them leap apart instantly. There sat Ginny andHarry on the couch. Kissing. When the door hit the wall, Ginny gasped and they both jumped back, but it was too late. Ron had seen Hermione angry before, but never like this. Her eyes were flashing dangerously, her face was a brilliant shade of red, and her hands were clenched into tight fists. "HARRY JAMES POTTER!!" she screamed," WHAT THE HECK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" Harry was just staring, his face white, ears and neck red, and his eyes, and mouth, wide open. "I.....I...," he stammered. "Your what?" she said, eyes glittering," Your sorry for going behind my back and betraying me with my best friend??? Well, I dont want to hear it!" And with that she shot up the stairs into the girl's dorm. "Oh geez, Hermione," Ron shouted. He raced up the stairs after her, leaving a shocked Harry and Ginny alone again. He knocked quietly on the door. "Hermione?" Ron knocked again. No answer. he carefully turned the knob and pushed open the door. She was no where in sight. "Hermione, where are you?" he whispered, and then," OW!!!!!" He had tripped over something in the dark, and when he picked it up, he found that it was a beautiful leather book with unicorn tail binding. Upon opening the cover, he found that it was Hermione's diary!!! He gazed at it for a minute, feeling devilish in spite of everything, but then he decided against it. He tossed the book onto her bed. Then, as he pushed aside the crimson drapes, he noticed the open balcony door near the back of the room * * * The night air was cool, and the stars were shining brilliantly, silouetted against the midnight blue sky. Hermione was standing near the edge of the balconey, gazing up, when she heard the balconey door open softly. She knew who it was without looking. "How could I not see it coming?" Hermione said softly, looking once again to the sky. Ron didn't say anything, but came up and stood next to her on the railing. Hermione went on: "I mean, I guess that I dont really have a right to be angrey. But it still hurts." She glanced at Ron, but he didnt' look at her. "Of course it hurts." said Ron finally, and the bitterness in his voice surprised Hermione. "It would sting to be dumped by Harry, the famous Harry Potter. Potter the Perfect.." He stepped back from the railing and looked at Hermione. She turned quickly to face him, an odd look on her face. "What are you talking about?!" she said in a surprised voice," Since when do you care about any of that?" It was like a dam had burst. "Since when?!" Ron spat out," Since the day that I arrived her, and became the official side-kick of the school's hero! Since I had to be the one, day after day, to just watch, and be happy for him, because he's my friend. And to never get any of the glory myself. And since he always had what I always wanted, and could never get!!! Like, like...........," his voice softened slightly," Like you." He turned away, sounding defeated. "Maybe it was only the necklace," he said, still not facing Hermione. "Maybe you really dont want me. I would understand if you want to go back to Harry. I......." He trailed off as Hermione disapeared into the dorm. She returned quickly, clutching something in her right hand. She opened her fist to reveal the necklace. Ron stared at it. Then she drew her arm back, and in one fluid motion, flung the Mal Fait Amour off the balconey. It landed with a small splash in the lake. But when she turned to Ron, her gaze questioning, he still had fire in his eyes. "But you're still upset about Harry I'll reckon. I know it. How will I ever be able to know how you really feel if-" As Hermione walked slowly up to him, he was still going on, but when she put a finger to his lips he stopped. She leaned closer, and looked into his eyes, and with her lips brushing against his, she whispered," I love you Ron Weasley." And those three little words made all the difference in the world.
