The following is from a post April 4, 2005
Hey, everyone:
I had a palatal adhesion done at Vanderbilt in Nashville last Tuesday. It
was a procedure to reduce hypernasality and nasal regurgitation resulting
from my brain tumor removal (which was 18 months ago at the end of this
month!). The doctor there (who pioneered this particular procedure)
basically took the layers of half of my soft palate and adhered them to the
delicate tissue in the back of my throat. If it sounds painful, that's
because it was! ; ) In addition to the obvious pain, I had a lot of pain in
my head, neck and back from how they positioned me during surgery. That was
tough but I had a massage therapist in Nashville who worked a miracle on my
back and head. She was better than Morphine for sure. I am still recovering
and the fatigue of it all is most difficult. I expected a 3-5 day stay and
was out within two days. Luckily, my parents and family flew down there with
me (yes, my mother flew for the first time) and helped me recover in the
hotel suites near Vanderbilt until we flew home Saturday. As always, my
husband is a saint who can NEVER know the amount of gratitude and love I
feel for him. Of course, I would do the same if situations were reversed,
but he's been my rock and energizer bunny and kudos belong to him for
sticking by me and playing solo parent once again. And of course, the
airline lost HIS bag, poor guy. And poor me, cuz my black Laura Ashley shoes
were in his bag! My parents deserve kudos too for the travel and for helping
to care for Sophie and Lily. If I could get my mom on a plane, you know that
woman loves me!
The pain was quite a treat. (I haven't eaten real food until tonight
when I managed to eat chicken noodle soup. Until now, I have been managing
to swallow Boost, but even that's painful. It's like an eery flashback to
smell and see food and yet can't eat it. Yikes. The results are yet to
realized from my surgery since I sound like I have swallowed a water
balloon. Once the swelling goes down, I hope that my tone is much improved.
Certainly, I haven't had problems with food/liquid traveling north at any
rate!
It's such a strange and rare little procedure but I am glad I did it and
look forward to improvement. I thank everyone who wished me well. I will be
working from home again until I can gain the stamina to work at the office
again. The surgery, medications, and stress of it all just knocked me out.
So, I will be taking it easy for a while.
This was the LAST of three recent trips to hospital since fall. I am looking
forward to a healthy spring for me and for all of you, too. Spring is coming
cuz it was down in Nashville already!! It's coming!
Thanks for your "ear" and talk to you soon,
