| TBI results from damage to brain tissue caused by an external force. A blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain is a TBI. It can occur without any outward physical evidence of injury or trauma. Examples of TBI include acts of violence, motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports/ recreational injuries, electric shock, lightning strikes, and blows to the head. Whiplash and shaken babies are two common TI that show no outward physical evidence.
