Q & A WITH LIV TYLER - from December Seventeen Issue

What we love about Liv is that despite all her fame, she's not so different from us. The 26-year-old actress, starring in this month's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, may be an international film star, but she still gets stage frightand watches Newlyweds.

When you were in high school, were you ever wild? Because you seem so sensitive and shy, but your parents [Bebe Buell and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler] are pretty wild and fun-loving?

Part of me is not shy at all. I'm very strong-willed and I'm completely opinionated, so that's kind of a bizarre balance of the two.

You've said you wanted to be a rock star, but you've decided to be an actress. Why aren't you a rock star?

I don't know why I'm not. I absolutely love to singand people tell me that I have a good voice, but I'm like, "Oh, thanks." And if you get me in front of a karaoke machine, we're in troublebecause I will just not shut up.

What's your favorite karaoke song?

God, there's so many. "Turn around. . .every now and then I get a little bit. . ." [singing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler]

From the roles that you choose to play and the interviews that I've read, I wonder, how do you stay so grounded and sweet?

It's been hard. I've had some wild things happen to me through all the Lord of the Rings-bashing. Most of that happened before people ever even saw the movie, and now I'm finally starting to get some sweet things that people have said about it.

Who do you look up to within your craft?

Drew BarrymoreI adore her. I look up to her in the sense that she has been through much in her life that could have made her so jaded, and opinionated, and mean, and she's so pure and sweet still. I relate to her in that way. A lot. And Kate Hudsonshe's so successful, she's got such a wonderful career, and she's making movies that she wants to make. She's really living her life and being herself. I'm really impressed by that. Because in some ways, I feel that there's a part of me that's not very ambitious, and I have always wondered, like, God, are you supposed to chase things and really go for it? I like to sort of just be in my world, and be myself, and things come along, and I'll definitely go after them. I'm very strong-willed about the things I do want, but she seems like she has a nice balance of all that.

But you are ambitious.

I'm a chicken. There's a lot of things that I don't do because I'm scared. I have this terror. . .I have this horrible stage fright. And it's so bizarre, because I'm fine in interviews and when I get to a premiere, but if I have to speak on a stage, with a camera, I get so nervous that my heart is, like, leaping out of my body and I start to pass out. It's the weirdest thing. Orlando [Bloom] is being given some award next week in Los Angeles.

Do you have to introduce him?

He asked me to do it, and I literally had a panic attack. I was like, "I can't! I can't! I'm sorry!"

When was the moment that you appreciated the fact that you were tall?

Oh my God. . .I still struggle with that. I love the feeling of being talljust to be able to see the world. But I also hide myself a little bit, because my whole life, I had to slouch down to make people around me feel comfortable, or just to make myself feel comfortable. And now, I live in flat shoesConverse All Stars are my life. I have all these beautiful high-heeled shoes and beautiful boots, and I can't bring myself to wear them. In my everyday life, I don't like to call attention to myself.

Do you still keep in touch with Alicia Silverstone?

I saw her at Stella McCartney's store opening here [in New York City], but I haven't seen her for years.

Have you seen her new show, Miss Match, yet?

No, I don't watch TV. I want to so bad.

Have you seen Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica?

Well, Roy played this gig for Burberry during Fashion Week, so I went, and the press people kept saying, "We want to introduce you to Jessica and Nick," so I met them, and they were so sweet, actually. Then I watched the showthat episode about house decoratingand I was like, "Oh my God, I'm not alone."

Your husband [former Spacehog singer Royston Langdon, 31] seems really cute.

He's so cute. He's a sweet boy. I mean, he really keeps me in a nice place. He's just in his mind, singing weird songs around the house and making jokes, being very creative.

Would you have dated him if you didn't like his music?

No way. Well, I love his music so I don't know.

Did you like his music before you knew him personally?

Well, I knew him for three years before we were together. I wasn't like a Spacehog groupie or anything. When I really started to have a crush on him, I used to listen to his record constantly. I'm really like that with music. If I like something, I'll listen to it every day for months, wear it out.

What are you listening to now?

I'm totally obsessed with the Kings of Leon. I dance around the house. It's really good rock 'n' roll.
I love Beyonce. She writes great songsand she writes her own songs which is incredible in this day and agebecause no one writes their own songs. She's so sweet, and kind, and lady-like, and well-manneredand then she's totally naughty, and incredible, and sexy. I love to see all of the sides of a woman. We have so many sides, and they come out at different times, and it's really nice to see that.

Do you have a favorite song?

"I'll Always Love You," by Dolly Partonthat is my favorite song. If I'm really honest, I'm such a sucker for Patsy Kline, Billie Holiday, and all those incredible women's songs. When I'm home alone, that's what I put on. I'm such a romantic. I just lay around and dream.

Does Roy like that kind of music? Does he make fun of you?

No, he doesn't make fun of me, because it's just part of me. It's just comes along with the complicated package of Liv.
