Tutorial
(for Eora staff adding web pages)

A) To build a web page

1) Open the Program "Netscape Navigator"

2) Click on "communicator" from the top menu bar, then go to "composer".

3) Use composer in a similar fashion to a word document to build the page you are wanting to put on the web.

4) When you have completed your page, click on "view" from the top menu bar. Go to "Page Source" and you will have a copy of the HTML code for your page. Copy this page of code.

B) To (up)load a page onto the web.

1) Log into geocities (http://geocities.yahoo.com/) with the username "eorawork" and the appropriate password.

2) Go to "File Manager", then on the next page click on "Open File Manger".

3) Go to "New" (file). You will now have a page up with a blank space for the file name, and having some HTML code in a new window. Give the page a file name, for instance, "work.html". (Be sure to include the .htm (or .html) extension on this file.)

4) Shade and delete any HTML code in the window at the centre of the page.

5) Paste your new HTML code (from step A4 above) into this window.

6) If your web page includes images, you will need to use the "upload files" command to locate and upload the image from your computer. These images are not automatically transferred with the HTML code, but need to be done seperately.

Note: it may be possible to simply upload the HTML code directly from your computer to the Geocities site. This (simpler) technique does NOT work for the apple computers in the computer room at Eora.

C) To add your page to the index on the main page

1) Open the main (index) page  http://geocities.com/eorawork (Use a new browser window for this.)

2) Go to "file" and "save as". This will save a copy of the main inex page onto your hard drive. (take note of the name (index.html).

3) In Netscape Composer, go to "File", then "Open" then "Page in Composer".
This will enable you to edit the "index" file. You can add your new file name, with a link to the new file using the link feature.

4) Add a link to your new page (created above) to the index. (use the link button, and place the full name of your new file, including the file name extension for this address as the link destination). Save this file

5) Go to "view" (in composer) and page source, copy the HTML code.

6) Having already logged into geocities at the eorawork site, click on "index" and "edit". Replace the existing HTML code for this site with your revised HTML code.

7) Save. Now go and see what a good job you made of it, and follow any new links you put in to check they are operational.

8) If there are no problems, congratulations. If you have a problem, retrace your steps till you have fixed it.
