| Circumcision It cuts deeper than you think |
| My research into the foreskin started before I had children. My quest for knowledge about alternative medicine, homebirth etc. naturally led me to circumcision, and let me tell you, I was apalled at what I learned. I have included many of the great links (at right) that led me to believe that we are doing a great disservice to our sons when we remove their foreskins. Among the startling things I learned was that the foreskin is an important part of the penis, that Circumcision is an extremely painful procedure with no good pain relief and that no industrialized countries can even recommend routine circumcision (and there is much more). I urge you to examine this evidence carefully before you make the decision to have your son circumcised (a decision that I believe is not even ours to make). |
| Being a Christian I was coming from a unique place in terms of circumcision. I mean, God had declared all his followers in the Old Testament to be circumcised. If it was so bad then why did He ask them to do this? I have pondered this question and I guess we will just never know. But I have my theories, one of which is that, in asking for circumcision, God was asking that men cut off a part of a very important, very private part of their body. What better way to test man's faith and obedience. It was also a way to physically set men apart from each other. I for one believe that God protects those who obey him. And I am sure that, in obeying God, the Jews suffered little in terms of side-effects or complications from their circumcisions. |

| Many Christians still use the Bible as reason to circumcise today. But this reasoning is flawed because when Christ gave Himself for us we were no longer bound by the law, and circumcision was part of the Law. Paul clearly explains this in the NT. | Many people mistakingly choose circumcision because they think it prevents health problems. The fact is that any reduction in the chances of getting uriniary tract infections and penile cancer etc. by being circumcised are so minuscule, that even the AAP admits that is does not warrent routine circumcision for health reasons. | Nope, sorry, this one doesn't fly either. The uncircumcised penis is acutally self-cleaning! I suppose there are any number of body parts we could cut off because they might require a bit more care at bath time. An intact penis is actually very easy to keep clean. | While it is true that there is the occasional rare occurence where an adult male *may*choose to get a circumcision this is by no means common practice nor is it usually necessary. | Circumcision to look like others |
| I would have to say that this has got to be the least valid argument of them all. Dads want their boys to look like them. They don't want their sons to be made fun of in the locker room. Or their older brother was circumcised so we might as well get it done to them all. Future mistakes don't make up for past wrongs. A boy has the right to have his penis intact regardless of what his father's, brother's, or the boys-in-the-locker-room's penises look like. The fact of the matter is that circumcision is declining. Most men in the world are NOT circumcised. And according to the previous link, only 67% of men in America are circumcised. So out of 10 boys in the locker room, your uncircumcised son will have on average 2 uncircumcised friends! |
