hong kong cinema
many people are under the mistaken impression that hk cinema is nothing but jackie chan and/or bruce lee. this couldn't be farther from the truth. one can find as many varieties of film from hk as in american film, but the main difference is either "reading" the film or listening to a badly dubbed version.
drama
one of the best directors i have seen is wong kar wai. i don't think i can explain what it is he does, but he does it so well. i haven't seen all his movies, but they do include:
- as tears go by
- chungking express
- ashes of time
- fallen angels
- happy together
action
where to begin?! let's start with john woo, who is just fabulous. since he has become well-known in america, his movies are fairly easy to find. just beware that some of his movies will be edited!
- a better tomorrow
- a better tomorrow ii
- the killer
- once a thief
- bullet in the head
- hard boiled
after john woo, one must mention ringo lam. he isn't as well known to americans as john woo, but has put out some impressive works nonetheless.
- twin dragons
- full contact
- prison on fire
- city on fire
