Three abandoned churches in a row;
Tombstones behind them hidden by waving timothy;
A farmhouse with broken panes,
Still shielded by limp curtains, dark with dust;
Further along the road, a deserted mineshaft.
In the neighbouring village
The only young men on the street are these granite soldiers
Carved on the war memorial in front of the Post Office.
