Tombstone Inscriptions Of Whitacre Cemetery |
|
| Jacob Gobble Family Tombstone | Bloom Township, Wood County, Ohio |
Whitacre Cemetery in October 2000 |
This cemetery is located just immediately east of the village of Cygnet, OH on the north side of Cygnet Road. The cemetery is known as the Whitacre Cemetery with the alternative name of Sugar Grove Cemetery. The cemetery is not shown on USGS maps (83° 38' 35" W; 41° 14' 24" N). Land for the cemetery was donated by Reason Whitacre from his 200 acre farm ca. 1840. He settled in Bloom Township in 1833 with his parents.
These readings have been copied by the website author from "Tombstone Inscriptions from Cemeteries in Wood County County, Ohio" 1984 as compiled by Mac and Lynette McCullough, as updated in 1988 by the Wood County Genealogical Society, and as surveyed by the website author. Footnotes have been added by the website author. Rows are numbered from the western edge of the cemetery nearest Cygnet Road to the eastern edge. Each row begins at the southern limit of the cemetery and proceeds north.
At the time of the 1984 readings, the stones in this cemetery were described as "....in very bad shape and many are completely illegible".
In October 2000 the cemetery is still well-kept; and the stones have continued to deteriorate. A wooden sign identifies it as "Whitacre Cemetery". The property is an open field with no fencing. Some of the older stones have broken and the pieces are stacked by the more durable granite monuments. Other stones are lying on the ground, partially buried.
See the Commemorative Historical and Biographical Record of Wood County, Ohio 1897 article following the index for information about the cemetery's creation and history.
This website created by Gary L. Franks of Perrysburg, OH on 09 September 2000. The genealogy of the GOBEL / GOBBLE Family can also be found at the RootsWeb WorldConnect website.

The following description of the Whitacre Cemetery (aka Sugar Grove Cemetery) is extracted from the book "Commemorative Historical and Biographical Record of Wood County, Ohio; Its Past And Present" published by J. H. Beers & Company, Chicago, 1897:
An Old Cemetery - Among the soldiers buried in the Sugar Grove Cemetery are: James McNealy, of the Revolutionary war; Marcus and Lyman Palmerton, and R. Lowe, of the war of 1812; W. Stull, A. Palmerton, T. J. Shinebarger, G. Hiser, J. Morks and T. H. Phillips, of the Civil war. These veterans lie in the old cemetery on the Reason Whitacre farm, east of Cygnet. The cemetery was opened in 1841,with the burial of Hannah Whitacre, the eldest child of the present owner of the land. In the newer cemeteries of the township many soldiers of the war of the Rebellion find a resting place beside the warriors who entered the forest in the "thirties", and gave battle to the obstacles which they encountered. The Bloom Cemetery, referred to in other pages, was opened in 1842. The Weaver Cemetery, one-half mile north of Bairdstown, was established about twenty years ago, while one or two other spots are dedicated to the dead.
