From Series and Manga to Fanfiction

Possessors of the Clow originated qite a long time ago. It's origens were no where near as complecated as the current plotline. In 1999 a "prototype" chapter was written which was never actually on Fanfiction.net. This first draft was a middle chapter and had none of the major plot elements that POTC does, excluded plot lines and characters included all of Salcon and his demons, Eriol, Nakuru, Spinnel and Fujitaka, Sakura's father. At that point in time the anime series wasn't even completed yet and the manga wasn't anywhere near being releaced so the first draft was somewhat lacking in plot consistency, which is the most important factor in writing a fanfiction.

The second draft started with a beggining chapter. This chapter was posted on the site but was re-written and replaced during the story overhaul in 2003. But the first chapter, much like the first draft lacked the same plot lines and characters that the current story supports. The concept of the story wasn't being taken very seriously when it was first published approximatly two years ago and I hadn't intended to continue it at all but as luck would have it by chapter four, the first fouth chapter, The Council of Eriol, the plot began to come together into a complecated and intircal storyline.

It was in the chapter "The Council of Eriol" that the primery plot was actually conceaved. I thought up the plot line as I wrote the chapter and by sheer serendipidy it became a good story. From there as I wrote the following chapters more and more plotline stired in my mind and the pieces began to fall into place. Of corse, because the more I thought about the plot, the more the old chapter enteries didn't fit the new plot lines. Then came every writers worst nightmare: I had to go back and heavely edit all the chapters and completely re-write the first chapter as said before. Annoying little flawed details built into the story from the beginning caused me quite a few migranes over the weeks that I re-hauled the story. Things like incorrectally spelled names, "Nakuru" was spelled "Naruku" and "Li" had to become "Syaoran."

A few interesting facts about the story are the fairly large plot mistakes that I had origunally made because during the writing process, I was still learning the progression of the anime and manga. A large one that cause big problems was the death of Clow. The character, Clow Reed, didn't technically die, as you probably know if you're a CCS (Cardcaptor Sakura) fan, he divided himself into two beings: Eriol and Fujitaka, Sakura's father. This was the case in the manga version at least.
One other thing that caused problems was the question of which storyl ine I was basing the fic off of as the anime and manga didn't share some major plot lines with each other. For example; in the anime, at the end of the collection of the Sakura Cards, Syaoran goes back to Hong Kong and stays untill the movie which I will admit, I haven't seen, whereas in the manga, after he goes back to Hong Kong, afew pages later he moves to Tomeda and they live happily ever after. It's obvious which one I went with by that example but I used factors from both thereby blurrying the line.

Liberties and Mistakes

Aside from the source story details, there, with fanfictions by definition, was a certiain ammount of licence I took in writing the story. I feel slightly bad about it, that even though I always do my best to be completely true to the story plotlines and characterization rules (not making a character act as they wouldn't in the series or manga) there were a few things that I changed in the interest of the story. Two major ones, for example: Eriol, in the series and manga, has all of Clow's memories. In the fanfictiona he doesn't remember every detail of Clow's life. I explain this in my own creative way however, but it too is divergence from the true plotlines of CCS.
In the anime and manga, to keep Yukito and Yue from dying, Youya gives his magic to him and saves his life but then Touya no longer had any magic and became a normal human. In the fic, it's implied that even though it did in fact happen, he gradually regained his power of sixth sence (he can see ghoasts.)
In the manga, at least, it says that Clow was the most powerful magision in the world and that he lived for hundreds of years. Agan, not a change but a modifacation of the plot points; the fic says that there were many magisions and some where as poerful as him, and there were other races who where much more poerful. Minor notes of change but, like the others, with in acceptable bounds of reason.
On the note of Clow's lifespan, the fic indicates that the events that set the story into motion happened a very long time ago, sometime in the middle ages but not before the year 1000 a.d. but a small detail in the manga indicates that Clow's "death" occured in the 17 or 18 hundreds. What indicated this was the
clothing Clow wore in a particular illistration that looks late Victorian, to me anyway. This doesn't mean I made any mistakes but depending on how well the reader knows the CCS storyline it could cause confusion.
