| Andrew "Ender" Wiggin is six years old when the novel begins. In a society that only allows two children per family, Ender is a Third. His birth was authorized by the government, a government trying to find military geniuses to lead Earth's forces at the next battle with the Formics. Ender is the best of the best and the genius among geniuses. He is taken to Battle School by Colonel Graff, who believes him to be Earth's best hope for the next commander of the human fleet. Even before he arrives at Battle School, Ender is isolated from the other children. He slowly begins to make friends and alliances, most notable among them Shen and Alai. However, he also makes some enemies, most importantly Bonzo Madrid - a Spanish boy with whom Ender has a major conflict halfway through the novel. Key to Battle School is the Battle Room, a zero-gravity environment in which the children stage mock war games. All students in the school are divided into armies and they play one another for points and standings. Ender is transferred to an army from his "launchie" group far too early, and has trouble fitting in with the older children. He is ostracized, and soon decides to hold his own practices in the Battle Room outside of normal hours. As Ender advances in the standings, he is finally given an army of his own - again ahead of his time. Ender manages to turn them into the finest army in the school, and his Dragon Army proceeds to win every game they play. Quickly, the odds begin to change as the teachers rig the game to make it harder and harder for Ender to win. As the frequency of the battles increases, it becomes apparent that Earth is quickly running out of time. Will Ender be ready in time for the final invasion? I guess you'll have to read the book... |
