| DID YOU KNOW..
A look back at early area history as found in the archives of the Enderlin Historical Society and Museum by Susan Schlecht I hope you enjoy this fun article which appeared in the August 14, 1919 Enderlin Independent. It is quoted here exactly as it appeared back then on the front page and should be interesting to many area residents. STOLE A MARCH ON HIS FRIENDS Prominent Young Business Man of Enderlin and Casselton Lady Quietly Married. Last Tuesday evening, as the shades of night were falling, Mr. Rex Lindemann hied him out to the Leo Miller farm, where Miss Lillian Flath was visiting, took the young lady into his auto and drove from there straight to Lisbon. There they roused Clerk of Court Rufsvold from his peaceful slumbers and procured a marriage license. Next on the program was a visit to Judge Thomas with a request that he unite them in the holy bonds of wedlock. The judge, who always lends a helping hand to those in need, notwithstanding the lateness of the hour, immediately donned his best frock coat suit and just as the clock was tolling out the tuneful hour of midnight completed the ceremony which made the happy couple man and wife. The young couple succeeded in completely surprising their many friends and not until the following afternoon did their secret get out. The groom is a native of Enderlin and one of our most prominent young business men. The bride comes from our neighboring city of Casselton, where she is most highly esteemed. Their many friends will unite with the Independent in hearty congratulations. Sues comments: I think this article gives us a great look at life shortly after the end of World War I and the light-hearted way that news was reported. I had to look up the word hied thinking it was a typo but I found it is a real word meaning to go quickly, hasten. By the way, have you been thinking about your Journey Stories? What led to your familys arrival in Enderlin or where have YOU gone and how did YOU get there? Enderlin will be hosting the Smithsonian Institutions exhibit by that title May 30 through July 11 provided through the ND Humanities Council. The Enderlin Historical Society will be giving you the opportunity to write your familys Journey Story and have it preserved in our archives for future generations to study and enjoy. Look for more information coming soon along with information on ways to participate. In the meantime, start researching and writing! |
