Part 9

****************

It's a very pleasant evening in the Evans house. The house is replete with friends and relatives. They are all there to celebrate Isabel and Jesse's engagement. And even Michael Guerin is there.

"Oh, Isabel! You are so lucky. You got one of the good guys. I mean Jesse is so nice, so mature, so different from those losers at school," one of Isabel's old friends from school comments.

"Thanks. I guess I am." Jesse comes behind her and kisses her. She  smiles at him.

******************

In the corner of the room, Isabel and Max's parents, Diane and Phillip, are talking with Jim Valenti and Amy Deluca.

"I still think that she is too young to marry and all but when my Iz gets something in her mind it's just impossible to stop her," says Phillip.

*****************

In the other corner, Maria and Liz are discussing which one of them is going to be the next to marry, while Max tries to have a conversation with Michael, who isn't listening to a word that he is saying.

*************

"So, have you heard about the hole? It's amazing, isn't it? Do you really think it's an alien?" Amy asks.

"Oh, these things scare me," Diane Evans replies.

"Huh, alien? Who believes in that?" Phillip laughs."I think it's probably some secret project from the government. What do you think Jim?"

"I guess I have to agree with you, Phillip. Everybody knows that there are no such things as aliens, specially here in Roswell." Valenti chuckles.

"I really don't care if they exist or not, what matters is that this is good for my business," Amy concludes.

***************

"So, Isabel, Jesse. Are you thinking about kids?"

"I..." Isabel is stunned. Kids? Kids? How come she forgot about this? Of course, if she is going to marry that means that sooner or later...No. She can't. She doesn't even know if they can have children with humans and if she can, what they would be. Aliens? Humans? Hybrids? What if her baby can't live here like what happened with Tess and Max's son?

Would she and her baby die since the Granolith is gone and they don't know how to  go to Antar? .. Oh, God. She can't have a baby...This is so unfair. Oh, how she hates her life right now. Why did they have to recreate her or whatever they have done? Why didn't they just leave her dead so she could rest in peace? After all, if she betrayed them why would they give her another life?

For history to repeat itself? No, they wanted to punish her. So, now she is on a planet where humans and aliens hunt her. She is completely in love with the same man that she once betrayed. And she can't have a
baby. She still remembers the dreams...how good it felt to have their baby in her arms. But it was only a dream. He chose his destiny. He is happy. And now she is trying to do the same but she knows that she will never be as happy as she was in that dream.

"I think it's still too soon to think about kids, isn't it darling?" Jesse stares at her.

"Yes. Too soon," she whispers, giving him a fake smile. "I'm going to get more drinks. Do you want anything, dear?"

"Just you." They kiss and she leaves.

*******************

In the Kitchen.

Isabel finds Kyle alone in the kitchen.

"Hi," he says.

"Kyle? What are doing here, alone?" Isabel asks.

"Nothing. Just thinking." He has a very sad look on his face.

"I see. You look terrible," she says sincerely.

"Gee, thanks." Kyle chuckles.

"I'm serious, Kyle. You have been a great friend since Alex, well you know."

"Yeah."

"You have no idea how scared of you and your father I was in the beginning. I saw Max's relationship with the ex-girlfriend of the sheriff's son as a risk. But that was then, you know, before all the world got to know our secret. And now you and your father have become very good friends and the only thing that I regret about this is that this friendship put your lives in danger." She is getting the drinks.

"Isabel, I..." He can't finish his sentence.

"Don't say anything that you'll regret later, Kyle. Because you will. You are just confused. What happened with Tess...I know it wasn't easy for you, she was like family to you and well...I know it's hard, she
was my friend too. I even saved her from Whitaker. I really don't understand why she did what she did. We were her family, you were her family. But I don't hate her, I should but I don't. I feel sorry for
her. She grew up alone. I can't imagine myself growing up without Max and Michael. And she is alone now again, god knows where and how. Our lives are just too complicated, Kyle. Not even Buddha can make it easier. So, I suggest that you move on. Don't let the stupid aliens mess with your life again. You have already died once because of us, and I think that's enough. Come on. There are at least five cheerleaders here tonight that would give anything to date Kyle Valenti. Go. Live your life, Kyle. You deserve it."

Kyle stares at her speechless. Isabel gets the tray with the drinks and turns to leave. Making a pose with the tray she smiles at him. "So. How do I look?"

"You look great as always."

"I know. And you still look terrible. See, that's another difference between aliens and humans. I can always pretend and no one seems to notice the difference." She shrugs and leaves Kyle wondering what she meant when she said that she could always pretend. Isn't she happy about her own engagement party?

******************

Jesse is outside the house getting some air. Someone appears behind him.

"Hey, Michael."

"Jesse," Michael replies coldly.

The two stare at each other for a while.

"So, Michael. I hope we can be good friends. Isabel talks a lot about you and..."

"Really?" Michael interrupts him. "Funny. She never talks about you. I mean in fact she told us about you when she said she was getting married and then...No. No. Just that once."

Jesse glares at him. "Look. Mr. Guerin. It's obvious that you don't like me. And to tell you the truth I don't like you either. But for some strange reason Isabel does. I really can't understand how she can be a friend of a nobody like you but as I said before she is, so let's just try to pretend that we tolerate each other. Just for her, Ok?"

Michael has a serious expression. He steps forward, staying face to face with Jesse. "Listen to me, you moron. If you ever, and I mean just for a split second, hurt her, I will hunt you down and kill you...very slowly...without any mercy."

They glare at each other. The tension between them is high and is increasing to a point that nothing could stop those two from kill each other, except...

"Jesse? Are you there?" Iz appears at the front door. Her heart skips a beat when she notices it is Michael who is talking to Jesse. "Michael? What are you both doing here?"

"Nothing, dear. We are just having a little talk," Jesse replies quickly.

Isabel looks at Michael suspiciously. Since when does Michael have a little talk with anyone? Uh-oh. She is in the middle of the situation she was avoiding during all the party. But no, somebody out there really doesn't like her. Here she is with him, the man she has been in love with since...well, since she can remember and the man...well, the man she really likes and hopes can learn to love.

"So, you were talking about?"

"Football," Michael says at the same time Jesse says, "Cars."

Isabel bites her lower lip and looks at the two incredulous. "Ok, if I said that I believe that, would that make you two come back to the party?"

"I'm already there." Michael waved his hands and got into the house before she could say another word.

She stares at Jesse who comes near her, hugging her.

"You aren't going to tell me what you two were talking about, are you?"

"It was nothing really important."

"If you don't want to say, just don't say it. But don't lie to me. I know Michael. He would never come to talk to you if it wasn't really important."

"Forget about him. This is our night. Let's get inside. Everybody must be looking for us."

She nods. They get into the house. However, when she is closing the door she has a strange feeling and looks back at the street. There's nothing. She closes the door and comes back to the safety of her house.

From behind some shrubs, he appears. Still wearing the same black t-shirt and old jeans. He takes his alien device from his pocket. No strange sound this time. No sign. Everything is ok, at least for now.
