| Spectacled Bear Status - Seriously threathend to the state of extinction - South America Only South American species of bear, found in mountain forests (cloud forest), especially in the Andes. It feeds mainly on shoots and fruit and is an agile climber. It stands about 2 ft (60 cm) at the shoulder, is 4�6 ft (1.2�1.8 m) long, and has a 3-in. (7-cm) tail. Its shaggy coat is dark brown to black. Whitish to yellowish marks form its �spectacles� and often extend down the neck to the chest. The Spectacled Bear, also known as the Andean Bear, has black fur with a distinctive beige-coloured marking across its face and upper chest. Males can weigh up to 130 kg, and females 60 kg. They are located in few areas of South America, including western Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, western Bolivia, northwestern Argentina, and southern Panama. It is the only bear native to South America. Next to the Giant Panda they are the most endangered species of bear in the world, though their survival has depended mostly on their ability to traverse even the highest trees of the Andes and the Amazonian forest basin. Threats: Loss of habitant, and poaching for the Asian Medical Market. |

The fast depleting forest cover, the rumbling of big trucks, the lights and noise of the industries running round the clock have driven the wildlife out of their habitats.
