What
happened during the last week of Christs life.
Some
of the events may surprise some readers.
Lets
look at what the scriptures say.
Previously
to where we start our account, Jesus had been in Bethany, and raised Lazarus
from the dead, when this happened some of the Jews reported this miracle
to the Pharisees. The Pharisees had great concerns for the nation
and thought Jesus would turn the whole nation towards Him, and so sought
to kill Him.
Joh
11:18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs
off:
Joh
11:19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them
concerning their brother.
Jesus
performed the miracle and raised Lazarus from the dead.
Joh
11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus,
come forth.
Many
of the Jews believed on Him, but some went to the Pharisees. Here
we see the start of the conspiracy which led to the death of Jesus.
Joh
11:45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the
things which Jesus did, believed on him.
Joh
11:46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told
them what things Jesus had done.
With
this latest information regarding the miracles of Jesus, the Pharisess
and the chief priests feared the whole nation would turn to Him and the
Romans would take over.
Joh
11:47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council,
and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.
Joh
11:48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and
the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
Joh
11:49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that
same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,
From
that moment on, they plotted to put Jesus to death.
Joh
11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should
die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
Joh
11:51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that
year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
Joh
11:52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather
together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
Joh
11:53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to
put him to death.
Because
of the evil plans to kill Him, Christ went into the wilderness to a place
called Ephraim. This may well be around the area of the Valley of
Achor.
Joh
11:54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went
thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim,
and there continued with his disciples.
Six
days before Christs death.
Christ
came to Bethany
Joh
12:1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where
Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
Joh
12:2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus
was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Christ
is anointed by Mary
Joh
12:3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly,
and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the
house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Judas
showed his true colours, he wasn’t concerned for the anointing of Christ.
Joh
12:4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son,
which should betray him,
Joh
12:5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and
given to the poor?
Joh
12:6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he
was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Mary
anointed Christ for His burial {this anointing for burial was done again
by a woman at the house of Simon the leper, 2 days before His death.}
Joh
12:7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone:
against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
Joh
12:8 For you have the poor with you always; but you do not always
have Me.
Joh
12:9 Then a great crowd of the Jews learned that He was there. And
they did not come for Jesus' sake only, but also that they might see Lazarus,
whom He had raised from the dead.
Joh
12:10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus
to death also,
Joh
12:11 because many of the Jews went away and believed on Jesus because
of him.
5
Days before Christs Death
Joh
12:12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when
they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
Joh
12:13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and
cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of
the Lord.
Christ
rides the ass from Bethphage
Mat
21:1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage,
unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
Mat
21:2 Saying unto them, Go into the village
over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt
with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
A great
amount of people waited for Christ to pass on the ass.
Mat
21:3 And if any man say ought unto you,
ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send
them.
Mat
21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by the prophet, saying,
Mat
21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee,
meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
Mat
21:6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
Mat
21:7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes,
and they set him thereon.
Mat
21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way;
others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
Mat
21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried,
saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name
of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
Notice
that the disciples did not understand at first, but later they did.
Joh
12:14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it
is written,
Joh
12:15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting
on an ass's colt.
Joh
12:16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but
when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written
of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
Joh
12:17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus
out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
Joh
12:18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard
that he had done this miracle.
Joh
12:19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye
how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
The
disciples praised Him.
Luk
19:37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount
of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise
God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
Luk
19:38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the
Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
Luk
19:39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto
him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
Luk
19:40 And he answered and said unto them, I
tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately
cry out.
Luk
19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over
it,
Luk
19:42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even
thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace!
but now they are hid from thine eyes.
Luk
19:43
For the days shall come upon thee, that thine
enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep
thee in on every side,
Luk
19:44 And shall lay thee even with the
ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee
one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
Notice
the people knew who He was
Mat
21:10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved,
saying, Who is this?
Mat
21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth
of Galilee.
4
Days before Christs Death
In
this next verse it is doubtful that He stayed with Lazarus Mary and Martha,
because the Pharisees had threatened to kill Lazarus, and also if Christ
had stayed here, the ladies would have certainly given Him breakfast before
He departed…..notice how He was hungry.
Mar
11:12 And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was
hungry:
Mar
11:13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply
he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing
but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
Mar
11:14 And Jesus answered and said unto it, No
man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
Mat
21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them
that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers,
and the seats of them that sold doves,
Mat
21:13 And said unto them, It is written,
My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den
of thieves.
Mat
21:14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he
healed them.
Mat
21:15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things
that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna
to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,
Mat
21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith
unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of
the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
Mar
11:18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how
they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was
astonished at his doctrine.
Some
of the Greeks wanted to see Christ.
Joh
12:20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship
at the feast:
Joh
12:21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of
Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
Joh
12:22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip
tell Jesus.
Joh
12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The
hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
Joh
12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you,
Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone:
but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
Joh
12:25 He that loveth his life shall
lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life
eternal.
Joh
12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow
me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me,
him will my Father honour.
Joh
12:27 Now is my soul troubled; and what
shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I
unto this hour.
The
Father speaks to Christ, and others heard the Father
Joh
12:28 Father, glorify thy name. Then
came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will
glorify it again.
When
the Father spoke it was for the peoples benefit
Joh
12:29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that
it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
Joh
12:30 Jesus answered and said, This
voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
Satan
is cast out
Joh
12:31 Now is the judgment of this world:
now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
Joh
12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from
the earth, will draw all men unto me.
Among
the chief rulers many believed but they loved the praises of men more than
the praise of God.
Joh
12:42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him;
but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should
be put out of the synagogue:
Joh
12:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Mar
11:19 And when even was come, he went out of the city
3
Days before Christs death
Mar
11:20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree
dried up from the roots.
Mar
11:21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold,
the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
Mar
11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have
faith in God.
Mar
11:23 For verily I say unto you, That
whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast
into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that
those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever
he saith.
Mar
11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What
things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and
ye shall have them.
Mar
11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive,
if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven
may forgive you your trespasses.
Mar
11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither
will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
The
chief priests and elders test His authority.
Mat
21:23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and
the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By
what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
Mat
21:24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I
also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell
you by what authority I do these things.
Mat
21:25 The baptism of John, whence was
it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned
with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto
us, Why did ye not then believe him?
Mat
21:26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold
John as a prophet.
Mat
21:27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said
unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority
I do these things.
Mat
21:28 But what think ye? A certain man
had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in
my vineyard.
Mat
21:29 He answered and said, I will not:
but afterward he repented, and went.
Mat
21:30 And he came to the second, and
said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
Mat
21:31 Whether of them twain did the
will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them,
Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom
of God before you.
Mat
21:32 For John came unto you in the
way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the
harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward,
that ye might believe him.
Mat
21:33 Hear another parable: There was
a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about,
and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen,
and went into a far country:
Mat
21:34 And when the time of the fruit
drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive
the fruits of it.
Mat
21:35 And the husbandmen took his servants,
and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
Mat
21:36 Again, he sent other servants
more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
Mat
21:37 But last of all he sent unto them
his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
Mat
21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the
son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him,
and let us seize on his inheritance.
Mat
21:39 And they caught him, and cast
him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
Mat
21:40 When the lord therefore of the
vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
Mat
21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably
destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen,
which
shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
Mat
21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye
never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the
same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it
is marvellous in our eyes?
Mat
21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The
kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing
forth the fruits thereof.
Mat
21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this
stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him
to powder.
Luk
20:19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought
to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that
he had spoken this parable against them.
Luk
20:20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign
themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they
might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
Luk
20:21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest
and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest
the way of God truly:
Luk
20:22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
Luk
20:23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why
tempt ye me?
Luk
20:24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and
superscription hath it? They answered and
said, Caesar's.
Luk
20:25 And he said unto them, Render
therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things
which be God's.
Luk
20:26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people:
and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.
Christ
spoke to them in parables and told them the parable of the marriage feast
Mat
22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and
said,
Mat
22:2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto
a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
Mat
22:3 And sent forth his servants to
call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
Mat
22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants,
saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner:
my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto
the marriage.
Mat
22:5 But they made light of it, and
went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
Mat
22:6 And the remnant took his servants,
and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
Mat
22:7 But when the king heard thereof,
he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers,
and burned up their city.
Mat
22:8 Then saith he to his servants,
The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
Mat
22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways,
and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
Mat
22:10 So those servants went out into
the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad
and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Mat
22:11 And when the king came in to see
the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
Mat
22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend,
how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
Mat
22:13 Then said the king to the servants,
Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness;
there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mat
22:14 For many are called, but few are
chosen.
Mat
22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle
him in his talk.
Later
on the Sadducees who say there is no resurrection questioned Him
Mar
12:18 Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection;
and they asked him, saying,
Mar
12:19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave
his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take
his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Mar
12:20 Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and
dying left no seed.
Mar
12:21 And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed:
and the third likewise.
Mar
12:22 And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman
died also.
Mar
12:23 In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose
wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.
Christ
corrected them
Mar
12:24 And Jesus answering said unto them,
Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the
power of God?
Mar
12:25 For when they shall rise from
the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the
angels which are in heaven.
One
of the scribes asked what is the greatest commandment
Mar
12:28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning
together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which
is the first commandment of all?
Mar
12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first
of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
Mar
12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy
God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and
with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Mar
12:31 And the second is like, namely
this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment
greater than these.
Notice
that the scribe knew that there was one God {this is referring to the Father,
He is the One True God}
Mar
12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said
the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
Mar
12:33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding,
and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour
as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
Mar
12:34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto
him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of
God. And no man after that durst ask him any
question.
Christ
continued to teach in the temple
Mar
12:35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple,
How
say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
Mar
12:36 For David himself said by the
Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I
make thine enemies thy footstool.
Mar
12:37 David therefore himself calleth
him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him
gladly.
Mar
12:38 And he said unto them in his doctrine,
Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations
in the marketplaces,
Mar
12:39 And the chief seats in the synagogues,
and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
Mar
12:40 Which devour widows' houses, and
for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.
Mat
23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Mat
23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees
sit in Moses' seat:
Mat
23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid
you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for
they say, and do not.
Mat
23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and
grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves
will not move them with one of their fingers.
Mat
23:5 But all their works they do for
to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the
borders of their garments,
Mat
23:6 And love the uppermost rooms at
feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
Mat
23:7 And greetings in the markets, and
to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
Mat
23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for
one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
Mat
23:9 And call no man your father upon
the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
Mat
23:10 Neither be ye called masters:
for one is your Master, even Christ.
Mat
23:11 But he that is greatest among
you shall be your servant.
Mat
23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself
shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Mat
23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men:
for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering
to go in.
Mat
23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long
prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Mat
23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when
he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Mat
23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides,
which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever
shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
Mat
23:17 Ye fools and blind: for whether
is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
Mat
23:18 And, Whosoever shall swear by
the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon
it, he is guilty.
Mat
23:19 Ye fools and blind: for whether
is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
Mat
23:20 Whoso therefore shall swear by
the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
Mat
23:21 And whoso shall swear by the temple,
sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
Mat
23:22 And he that shall swear by heaven,
sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
Mat
23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted
the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought
ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Mat
23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain
at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Mat
23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter,
but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Mat
23:26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first
that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may
be clean also.
Mat
23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear
beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all
uncleanness.
Mat
23:28 Even so ye also outwardly appear
righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Mat
23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the
sepulchres of the righteous,
Mat
23:30 And say, If we had been in the
days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the
blood of the prophets.
Mat
23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto
yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Mat
23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of
your fathers.
Mat
23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of
vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Mat
23:34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto
you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill
and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and
persecute them from city to city:
Mat
23:35 That upon you may come all the
righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto
the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple
and the altar.
Mat
23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these
things shall come upon this generation.
Mat
23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that
killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often
would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her
chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Mat
23:38 Behold, your house is left unto
you desolate.
Mat
23:39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not
see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the
name of the Lord.
Then
Jesus observed from the treasury
Mar
12:41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the
people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
Mar
12:42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites,
which make a farthing.
Mar
12:43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them,
Verily
I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which
have cast into the treasury:
Mar
12:44 For all they did cast in of their
abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her
living.
Jesus
then left the temple and told the disciples the Mount Olivet prophesy.
Mar
13:1 And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith
unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!
Mar
13:2 And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest
thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another,
that shall not be thrown down.
Mar
13:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple,
Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,
Mar
13:4 Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign
when all these things shall be fulfilled?
Mar
13:5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take
heed lest any man deceive you:
Mar
13:6 For many shall come in my name,
saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mar
13:7 And when ye shall hear of wars
and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be;
but the end shall not be yet.
Mar
13:8 For nation shall rise against nation,
and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places,
and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.
Mar
13:9 But take heed to yourselves: for
they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be
beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for
a testimony against them.
Mar
13:10 And the gospel must first be published
among all nations.
Mar
13:11 But when they shall lead you,
and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither
do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that
speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
Mar
13:12 Now the brother shall betray the
brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against
their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.
Mar
13:13 And ye shall be hated of all men
for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall
be saved.
Mar
13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination
of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought
not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea
flee to the mountains:
Mar
13:15 And let him that is on the housetop
not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out
of his house:
Mar
13:16 And let him that is in the field
not turn back again for to take up his garment.
Mar
13:17 But woe to them that are with
child, and to them that give suck in those days!
Mar
13:18 And pray ye that your flight be
not in the winter.
Mar
13:19 For in those days shall be affliction,
such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto
this time, neither shall be.
Mar
13:20 And except that the Lord had shortened
those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he
hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
Mar
13:21 And then if any man shall say
to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:
Mar
13:22 For false Christs and false prophets
shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible,
even the elect.
Mar
13:23 But take ye heed: behold, I have
foretold you all things.
Mar
13:24 But in those days, after that
tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her
light,
Mar
13:25 And the stars of heaven shall
fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.
Mar
13:26 And then shall they see the Son
of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
Mar
13:27 And then shall he send his angels,
and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost
part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
Mar
13:28 Now learn a parable of the fig
tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know
that summer is near:
Mar
13:29 So ye in like manner, when ye
shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the
doors.
Mar
13:30 Verily I say unto you, that this
generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
Mar
13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away:
but my words shall not pass away.
Mar
13:32 But of that day and that hour
knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son,
but the Father.
Mar
13:33 Take ye heed, watch and pray:
for ye know not when the time is.
Mar
13:34 For the Son of man is as a man
taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants,
and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
Mar
13:35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know
not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at
the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
Mar
13:36 Lest coming suddenly he find you
sleeping.
Mar
13:37 And what I say unto you I say
unto all, Watch.
Mat
25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven
be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to
meet the bridegroom.
Mat
25:2 And five of them were wise, and
five were foolish.
Mat
25:3 They that were foolish took their
lamps, and took no oil with them:
Mat
25:4 But the wise took oil in their
vessels with their lamps.
Mat
25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they
all slumbered and slept.
Mat
25:6 And at midnight there was a cry
made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
Mat
25:7 Then all those virgins arose, and
trimmed their lamps.
Mat
25:8 And the foolish said unto the wise,
Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
Mat
25:9 But the wise answered, saying,
Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them
that sell, and buy for yourselves.
Mat
25:10 And while they went to buy, the
bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage:
and the door was shut.
Mat
25:11 Afterward came also the other
virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
Mat
25:12 But he answered and said, Verily
I say unto you, I know you not.
Mat
25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither
the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
Mat
25:14 For the kingdom of heaven is as
a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered
unto them his goods.
Mat
25:15 And unto one he gave five talents,
to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several
ability; and straightway took his journey.
Mat
25:16 Then he that had received the
five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
Mat
25:17 And likewise he that had received
two, he also gained other two.
Mat
25:18 But he that had received one went
and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.
Mat
25:19 After a long time the lord of
those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
Mat
25:20 And so he that had received five
talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst
unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
Mat
25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done,
thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things,
I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy
lord.
Mat
25:22 He also that had received two
talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold,
I have gained two other talents beside them.
Mat
25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done,
good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I
will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Mat
25:24 Then he which had received the
one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man,
reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
Mat
25:25 And I was afraid, and went and
hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
Mat
25:26 His lord answered and said unto
him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I
sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
Mat
25:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have
put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received
mine own with usury.
Mat
25:28 Take therefore the talent from
him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
Mat
25:29 For unto every one that hath shall
be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall
be taken away even that which he hath.
Mat
25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant
into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mat
25:31 When the Son of man shall come
in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon
the throne of his glory:
Mat
25:32 And before him shall be gathered
all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd
divideth his sheep from the goats:
Mat
25:33 And he shall set the sheep on
his right hand, but the goats on the left.
Mat
25:34 Then shall the King say unto them
on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared
for you from the foundation of the world:
Mat
25:35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave
me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye
took me in:
Mat
25:36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was
sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Mat
25:37 Then shall the righteous answer
him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty,
and gave thee drink?
Mat
25:38 When saw we thee a stranger, and
took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Mat
25:39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in
prison, and came unto thee?
Mat
25:40 And the King shall answer and
say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto
one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Mat
25:41 Then
shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed,
into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Mat
25:42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave
me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
Mat
25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took
me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited
me not.
Mat
25:44 Then shall they also answer him,
saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or
naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Mat
25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying,
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of
these, ye did it not to me.
Mat
25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting
punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Jesus
stayed at the mount of Olives at night time.
Luk
21:37 And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night
he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.
2
Days before Christs Death
Luk
21:38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the
temple, for to hear him.
Mat
26:2 Ye know that after two days is
the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
Mat
26:3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes,
and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was
called Caiaphas,
Mat
26:4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill
him.
Mar
14:2 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar
of the people.
It
was at this time that Judas Iscariot went to the Chief priests and arranged
to betray Christ.
Mat
26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the
chief priests,
Mat
26:15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver
him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
Mat
26:16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
Judas
the brother of Christ also went to the Chief priests to arrange for Christs
arrest, it is not stated exactly when he went, but it was possibly at this
time as he had prearranged with them that he would kiss Christ and then
they could arrest Him.
We
would like to state at this point that Judas the brother of Christ did
not know that Christ would be put to death, he thought he would be
put in prison or something similar. Notice in Mark 14 v 44, they
were to take Him away safely.
When
the brother realized what was going to happen to Christ, he returned the
30 pieces of silver and hung himself notice Judas the brother of
Christ stated Christ was innocent Matt 27 v 3-5
Christ
is anointed for His burial
Mat
26:6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
Mat
26:7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very
precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
Mat
26:8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying,
To what purpose is this waste?
Mat
26:9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to
the poor.
Mat
26:10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why
trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
Mat
26:11 For ye have the poor always with
you; but me ye have not always.
Mat
26:12 For in that she hath poured this
ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
Mat
26:13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever
this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this,
that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
Satan
enters Judas
Luk
22:3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the
number of the twelve.
Luk
22:4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and
captains, how he might betray him unto them.
Luk
22:5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
Luk
22:6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them
in the absence of the multitude.
One
Day before Christs Death
The
Passover was on Wednesday that year. The 14th of Nisan. Because
Jesus was the Passover lamb, He had to take the Passover with His disciples
a day early, He had to die at the time the Passover lambs were killed.
The lambs were killed around 3pm – 5pm on Wednesday afternoon, Christ died
at 3pm Wednesday afternoon.
On
Tuesday the 13th in the afternoon, the disciples asked Christ where will
we prepare the Passover.
Mat
26:17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples
came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee
to eat the passover?
Christ
told them where they were to prepare the Passover. Notice that the
Passover is prepared.
Mar
14:15 And he will shew you a large upper
room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.
Mar
14:16 And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found
as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
Now
we come to the all important eating of the Passover meal. Notice
that it happens after sunset, the next day. The Passover was prepared
on the Tuesday afternoon, now it is eaten after sunset, the next day, the
beginning of Wednesday.
Mat
26:19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they
made ready the passover.
Mat
26:20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
The
next events which happened in the last day of Christs life, are set out
in detail in a companion article at this site called “The Last Day of Christs
Life”.
This
article goes through the 4 gospel accounts of the final 24 hours of the
life of Christ, and gives an in depth coverage of this time.
