Air Freshner
Recently, cellular telephone-activated air fresheners have begun to surface in various locations of the southeastern United States.  The Investigative Support Section has received information that this product is currently being sold at Pep Boys automotive stores as an air freshener and that it is also capable of detecting radio frequencies from cellular telephones.
The telephone signals will cause a set of lights on the air freshener to illuminate.  The air freshener comes in different configurations, such as blimps, helicopters, ducks, and airplanes.  The duck comes in both yellow and white.  The airplane comes in several colors, such as blue, pink, gray, and clear.
Both the duck and plane illuminate as a cellular telephone send out signals and as it receives signals/rings.  In Atlanta, some criminals are using them to detect law enforcement agents who carry transmitters.  The danger here is that narcotic violators are also using them to see if you are equipped with a body-wire transmitter.
Initial testing by ISS indicates that the air freshener being sold by Pep Boys is being marketed to detect when a cellular telephone is ringing and and can't be heard because of the music blasting.  The device seems to detect RF radiation in its immediate area, including law enforcement frequencies.
Testing has also shown that these devices will illuminate when a law enforcement agent has a transmitter on his/her person or in his/her possession and comes within four to six feet of the device.
Also, the device will illuminate when a uniformed officer either turns his/her police radio on/off or when he/she keys the radio in order to talk.  It is also found that the device illuminates from a greater distance if activated by the police radio.
