| The 'Hero' and the Beast Blue Mountains met the meadows green, Where flowers grew and breezes keened, The joyful birds sang from grove to east, Until the coming of the beast. It flew above, it slashed, it burned, Until the very mountains turned, To see the monsters blackened waste, The men retreated with all haste, And closed their lofty castles gate, As if the beasts wrath would abate. The awful beast their grass did crop, Then pulled down trees and ate their tops. For many years that wrath did wind, Across the land on which it dined, Until, a hero man did find, Who could the dreadful monster bind. He left the mountain castle gate, And for the beast he laid in wait, Until it chanced to wander by, And his thrown spear did strike its eye. But alas, the foe still lived on, But Hero his long sword had drawn, From his wet gully he arose, And struck his most ferocious pose, Covered thick in black muck and mire, His filthy state did fear inspire, As he swung for the monsters side, It turned away its face and cried, Then launched itself into the sky, And steady westward did it fly, Hero expelled a relieved sigh. And contrived a heroic lie Then to the castle he returned, Pretending to be beat and burned, And all the fair ladies did swoon, To bathe his many fictive wounds. For his deed he married well, Men did make a statue and bell, To say how brave Hero had been, To fight the unchallenged and win, Blue mountains meet the meadows green, Where flowers grow and breezes keen, Joyful birds sing in grove to east, Somehow Heros hoax forged peace. |
