Tsunami Relief Efforts and the challenge went out. The London Provincial Operations Centre challenged all Provincial Operations Centres to a fund raising challenge. While our own Shawn from "D" platoon challenged all of us to donate $20.00 each. The numbers aren't completely in yet but "B" platoon from PCC - Orillia had raised $550.00 in the first night of collecting. Not bad for one platoon out of 4. It will be interesting to see the final numbers from all Communications/Operations Centres. To raise this money, at the PCCO (Provincial Communications Centre - Orillia) Laurie D made an amazing pot of chili that was sold by the bowl. Lori L helped with the buns and butter. Cathy P. made some AMAZING candy apples that went over really well and were also sold to support the fund. There is an ongoing 50/50 draw and other misc activities such as "Coppers from Coppers" (a version of a penny drive). A worth while note: Alice H from the Orillia PCC had been saving her money to buy herself a diamond ring. Alice, after hearing the news, and the challenge took every penny ($400.00) and donated it to the Red Cross as well. WAY TO GO ALICE!!!! UPDATED AMOUNT FROM B PLATOON (Jan 14/05 = $672.50) According to A/Inspector Peterkin. The Orillia PCC has raised just short of $1000.00. We'll keep you up to date.

CO2 Susan B reports that the London Operations Centre has gone to great lengths to assist in raising funds as well. PCCL (Provincial Communications Centre - London) has many on-going events...chilli nights, sundae nights etc.....As well...they have a BIG pickle jar nicknamed "The Pickle's Pesky Penny Portal" where everyone is throwing in their spare change...it is sitting on the counter by the COR-PAY books. They are also having a REGION wide "wings" night as well on the 4th of Feb...one of the restaurants in Port Stanley is lending them a room in the restaurant, one of the guys is going to DJ (his friend donated all of the equipment), and they are inviting the entire region to take part...the "cover charge" will be a donation and the vendor is interested in donating a portion of the profits from that night to the cause as well!! One of the CO2's (Katy V) is working on getting two HUGE theme baskets together...(one a family night and one a relaxation night)...approx value will be $150.00 each... then we will have a silent auction for them. Another one of their CO2's (Michelle B) is a Creative Memories rep...(for the scrap booking)..and she is donating ALL of her profits for the next order to the cause as well!! Well Done London! I can't wait to see our final tallies!

From: The Red Cross Donations in Action What your donation to the Canadian Red Cross buys: Because of the widespread scope of this disaster over 12 countries, the cost of relief will differ from one area to another. Here is an idea of how your donation can make a difference: Those in affected areas need to use water purification satchels to make the water safe for use. $100 pays for enough satchels to purify over 20,000 litres of water A $70 donation will provide one family of 6 with hygiene materials to last one month. Each hygiene kit contains toothpaste, tooth brush, shampoo, toilet paper, soap, sanitary pads, razors, washing detergent and towels. The Canadian Red Cross is compiling and packaging 50,000 of these kits to deliver to families in Sri Lanka.
