Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect
What is Global Warming?
According to www.dairynet.com/kids/gloss, Global Warming is the gradual warming of the Earth's atmosphere.
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
The greenhouse effect is when the Earth's temperature rises because heat from the sun is trapped in the atmosphere by certain gases, such as Carbon dioxide, similar to what heappens in a greenhouse.

What are some causes of Global Warming?
Carbon dioxide, emited from powerplants, cars, trucks, airplanes, and buildings acount for the greatest cause of gloabal warming.  Carbon dioxide helps to trap heat in the atmosphere.  It is reported that people in city gridlocks burn 600 million gallons of gas while sitting still each year in America, again resulted in the release of Carbon dioxide.  Deforestation also results in increased amount of carbon dioxide.  Methane and Nitrous oxide, realised by humans, help to trap heat as well.

Global warming, partially caused by the greehouse effect, effect both humans and the environment.  Coast lines are dissappearing, stroms are getting stronger, and tens of thousands of people die each year from heat strokes.  Coutries around the world are affected by global warming.  In Bangladesh, about a million people per year are forced out of their homes due to rising river levels.  Birds in New England states can not find sufficiant food sorces because of the rising sea.  The coast line around Flordia is wached away everyday by a rising tide.  Humans are losing valuable living space, and delicate ecosystems are not surrviving the changing climate.  Even though part of global warming could be natural, it is not all natural.  One may think they enjoy the warmer summers, but reality shows much worse consequences.
Why are these issues a problem?

What can be done to stop Global Warming
The current US policy is to study global warming, not to prevent it.  What this means is it is up to you, the consumer, to do you part to prevent global warming.  Use energy efficient fuels, such as ethonal or biodiesel, and energy effiecent appliances.  Many people beleive only one person cannot make a difference, but the more poeple who think this, less will change.  I believe that if every takes part in preventing global warming, change can be made.  Simply doing small things, like buying energy efficient appliances, could make a huge difference.
