Deforestation

Deforestation is...
The cleary of forests around the world.  For several decades, humans have cut down, burned, and damaged forests.  At the current rate of deforestation, all of the world's rainforests will be gone in 100 years.  The forests are important to are world.  In rainforests, the nutrients found in plants and trees are much more important than those found in the ground.  The global climate is effected by deforestation.  Also, thousands of species go extinct every year due to deforestation.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Obviously, forests are cut down for a reason.  The land is used for farming, both crops and cattle.  Also, the trees are used for lumber.  However, the cons far outway the pros.  Deforestation threatens life world-wide.  After clearing the land, very few nutrients remain for new veggitation to grow.  We need are forests to protect ecosystems, the atmosphere, and the human species.  The loss of species lead to the loss of possiblilities for research.  Yet-to-be-discovered or studied species could hold the cure for horible epidemics, such as HIV/AIDs  (earthobservatory.nasa.gov).  Although the government claims to be protecting the forests for future generations, relating proves this feat to be difficult.  Illegal logging occurs, and the large amount of money brought in by deforestation causes most governments to turn their heads  (greenpeace.org).

Everyone needs to do there share in saving our world's environment.  Buying fewer paper products and recycling are important for many parts of environment, including the forests.  I fear what will happen if our forests go extinct.  Not only does our atmosphere depend on the forests, but the future of scientific discoveries.  Globally, forestation will only stop if the poor farmers who cut the forests are given alternative lifesyles.  Governments need to put a stop to deforestation to ensure the future of our planet.  (greenpeace.org)
