Peggy is one of these people. She is a very caring person that puts others before herself. She stands up for what she beleives in and beleives is right. There are not enough people like her in the world today. I am very honnered to call her a friend. Peggy has a group to honner Firefighters, EMS, and Police. Check it out: sherlock101551 |
| About Peggy
In her own words I am 53 years old and have seen a lot of minor tragedies in my life. Nothing compared to the World Trade Center tragedy, but, tragedy none the less. Fire fighters, ems and Police officers have always been there for me in times of those minor tragedies which to this day I appreciate. I was a volunteer with an esda group also known as Melrose Park Public Saftey. I had to quit due to health reasons. I served three years with them and even helped out with the pet parade in Brookfield. I joined because I wanted to give help and support to the fire department and police department as well as give something to the community. This is part of the reason I know what all of you go through. I was just starting out when Promises caught fire. It was my first call to duty. Bitter cold that night. Taught me a good lesson on what fire fighters go through fighting a fire in fridgid temperatures. The most touching image in my mind and I still to this day can't get it out of my mind for nothing and don't ever want to. A fire fighter sitting in the side cab of the engine when it was returning to quarters. He had a nomax hood on his head and his jacket bundled up around his neck. Looked like he was shivering from cold. We as civillians forget that fires are heated up and that sweat mixed with cold causes shivering. I know you understand what I'm talking about. The problems you encounter while out there on the job doesn't make your job any easier. Frozen hydrants and having to wait for a tanker truck to come. We were out there a good while blocking streets. I don't recall the time the call came in, but I know it was early evening and it was something like four in the morning before we returned to quarters. It's really amazing that fires don't care what time of year they happen, but it seems they choose the hottest day of the year to happen or the coldest day to happen. One or the other. It's nice that you run the canteen. I was thinking right after September 11th happened, how nice it would be for communities to do their part during a fire on their block. Bring out some lawn chairs for fire fighters to sit in to take a short break or bring out a table, put some throw away cups on the table, have some water brought out in pitchers and jugs or some hot coffee and hot chocolate when it was needed. To have a box of cookies or crackers on hand. Have ice on hand for the hot days. They would set it up in a good safe place as to not be in the way of the fire fighters, but close enough so that fire fighters could utilize it. Knock on wood, we haven't had any fires on our block yet. I pray we don't, but, if we ever do, it's something I would do. Leave it to me to start trends. What you do is wonderful. lol for fire fighters, ems and police officers Peggy |
| Hi Melissa,
I first wanted to let you know how thankful I am to have you as my friend. I thank God every day for you. You are wonderful in my eyes. I know it is hard with working, and taking care of a family, but please try to rest as much as you can. I am sending you a few poems this week, starting with my favorite ones. |
