Theatre Arts Department Head Interview

This interpretation is not a transcript of the actual interview. I would like to thank Ruth Cantrell for allowing me to do this interview in the first place and giving me all the information and incite she has given so far and I hope to work with her in the future. For more information on her or anything dealing with the the NMSU Theatre Arts Department please visit the department website via my "Outside Links" Page

The NMSU theatre program is centered in the Herzal Zohn Theatre. It is also known as the ASTC meaning American Southwest Theatre Company. The theatre is also where the main offices are including that of the department head  Ruth Cantrell. Some of the questions I asked were: Would the only an “Associate Degree of Arts or Fine Arts” help in a theatrical environment? An associates degree is not offered in theater arts and the associates degree of arts or fine arts for the most part doesn’t meet the requirements for a theatrical job because of the fact that the upper division classes are non existent. .Would it be wise to get both a Theatre Arts major and a minor in Design/Tech Track? A minor is not needed due to the fact that in the theatre arts major you have to take a broad range of classes but you can also focus some of you classes to a single area of interest (Example set design) Can any humanities be taken or are there specific ones for the theatre arts major? The only cross reference class between general education and the theatre degree is Shakespeare one and two. Are there any prerequisites for the Theatre Arts major? There are no prerequisites for the theatre arts major other than three recommended foreign language classes (including high school). Approximately how many performances are there in a year? There are approximately five to seven performances on the main stage and two to four on the upstairs stage. On the main stage there are usually ten performances to a show with the exception of the kids show which has twenty five performances.
