College of Business Advisor

For my interview I decided to go to one of the advisors in the college of business. Due to the fact that the business field is so broad and I am not completely sure what part of "business" I want to get into an interview with an advisor would be much more helpful than that of a business manager or more focused professional. I would like to thank the College of Business for offering this service to students and I would like to thank Jessica for giving me advise and telling me what she did when she was getting her degree. For more information on the College of Business Administration and Economics pleas visit their website via my "Outside Links" Page

I went in to talk to an advisor at the College of Business in Guthrie Hall. The advisor who I talked to was named Jessica Pena. I assume she is a graduate student because during the interview she mentioned she has a bachelors in Business Administration. I started by telling her my goal of doing a double major and my current major minor situation. She told me that all of those options I have available and the real decision is how much time I want to spend at the university. She explained that if I get a "double major" it might mean that I have to take separate courses for the general education ect since my other major is in a different college at the university. The good side is that some classes might be able to count for both majors and for sure 12 credits would be transferable because each bachelors degree requires me to "view a wider world" and take course outside the college of business. She also told me that all of the majors offered are "business administration" degrees so I would be able to choose a more focused major and still get all the a "business administration" degree. I had previously assumed if i get one of these focused majors like management and decide to go into the field of marketing I might not have all the requirements to get into this field. My next option is one I didn't even consider but seems much more likely I will peruse. That option is to get an associates degree in "prebusiness" this requires 64 credits and all of my current classes can apply for that but I need to petition that my current CS 110 count as the BCS 110 (basically the same class but the BCS is tailored for business students)  and my Econ 201 count for an econ requirement but petitioning the econ class would be more of an option if I went for the bachelors but is still available if I get an associates. She also told me who I needed to petition these classes to (Justine) and where her office is. My last option is to just stay with a minor in Business Administration. This would be effortless because all I need is 18 credits 6 of which I am currently taking and the rest would be able to count for "general electives" for the Theatre Arts major. She also provided me with handouts on these 3 options. She also told me of a cool "feature" NMSU offers that would be good for someone of my situation who isn't sure to what extent of a degree they want or isn't sure what degree they want at all. This is called the STAR Degree Audit and will allow you to input the classes any student has taken, select a college, degree, major, or catalog year and it will show you how many classes you have left to get that degree ect.
