Part 81- Owners of the Game
Since I didn't have work, I took my time out to turn down Akio for Miya. I had too. So anyway, after work, I changed and went to see Miya at work. He was waiting for me outside so I got kinda worried. I took off my helmet once the kick stand was out as I said,
"You okay?"
He nodded, walking over to me as he said,
"I got off early today."
"Oh..okay."
I smiled as I gave him my helmet and he took it as he pulled his bag on his bag. He held it for a little while as he said,
"When you gonna buy a second one of these?"
"I don't need it."
He sighed as he got it on and then straddled the bike, getting up close behind me as he put his arms around my waist and held on tight as I started it up and drove off. Miya's grip always got a little tighter when we started out but gradually loosened as I drove. I took him home first as he went to leave his bag up in his apartment. When he came back he paused for a moment before he said,
"So...what are we doing tonight?"
"Anything you want."
He thought for a while before he said,
"You sure you don't have anything to do tonight?"
"I'm sure."
"What about tomorrow?"
"Nothing I know of."
"Come stay with me for a while then."
"You sure?"
"Yeah...I'm sure."
I parked my bike as we then both went to his apartment.
I wasn't sure what to expect since I knew Miya well enough, but I didn't know what was going on inside his head all the time. I left my helmet on the table near the door, my gloves inside it as I took off my shoes. Miya shrugged off his coat as he then said,
"Want anything to eat or drink?"
"I'm fine."
I looked around for a moment as I reached my hand up to the back of my neck mostly to flip my hair back since it was growing back too fast as I said,
"So what-"
Miya clung to me. I felt him come up to me and hug me close pressing every inch of his body against mine, just how I loved him doing so. He rested his head on my shoulder, his hands around my back as I brought my arms up to hold him in return. How I missed holding him like this. I put my head on top of his as I said,
"Baby..."
"Jo, don't say anything."
I nodded as I let him hang onto me for a while. Eventually he did let go but he clasped my hand and we went back to his room. We laid down and for a minute, I thought things were going too fast. Not for me, but for Miya. I was about to say something when he just laid down beside me, his leg going in between mine, his hand holding onto my shirt as he put his head down on me as we laid on our sides. I held onto him again, stroking his hair back from his face as I stayed like that for the rest of the night. I didn't do anything else but lay there, stroking his hair back until both of us fell asleep.
I slept as soundly as I had since Miya left me. When I woke the next morning, despite my arm that had fallen asleep I was happy. I kept staring down in my arms, seeing Miya sleep there, his head cradled near my shoulder, his arm still around me while his other was tucked beside him. I sighed to myself, leaning down as I kissed his forehead, listening to him breathe as he slept. I felt so at peace with myself, loving everything he had to give to me now that he laid beside me. I wished I could be there longer, but eventually, my moment would have to stop and I would soon have to leave from where I was. After a while, Miya did wake up. He rubbed his eyes in the cute way he always does as he yawned. He turned away from me as he yawned as he threw his arm over my shoulder and said,
"Jo...?"
"Hm?"
"What time is it?"
I raised my arm, checking my watch as I said,
"Eleven."
"Okay."
He sighed, staying still for a while longer until my stomach rumbled. He laughed slightly as he said,
"You're hungry aren't?"
"I'm always hungry."
He laughed as he sat up and said,
"Okay, let's get something to eat."
"Okay where we going?"
"Nowhere. I'll make breakfast."
"Miya...baby...you can't cook."
He turned as he pouted at me as he said,
"I can too!"
I pulled his face down close to me as I kissed his full lush lips as I said,
"Did you learn?"
He looked at me with those deep brown eyes as he said,
"Sorta..."
I laughed, letting him go make breakfast as I stayed in bed. I got up after a while and went to help him as he made something in there. I didn't want to know what it was. He shooed me out and made me wait at the table as he then came out and said,
"How do you feel about take out?"
I laughed as I said,
"What did you do?"
"I made...something of a mess."
I smiled as I said,
"Let me see."
"I don't think it's edible."
I got up as I went to the kitchen to see he had attempted an omelet though it didn't look like much, some pieces of vegetables sticking out of it as I said,
"Miya, what were you trying to do?"
"Cook?"
I picked at it with some chopsticks as I took a piece off, seeing it was at least cooked. I bit off a piece and ate it slowly, figuring it wasn't so bad. I actually began to eat it as he said,
"How is it?"
"Pretty good actually."
I continued to eat it as I offered him a piece but he shook his head.
"It's good baby. You know how I am with my food."
He sighed, taking the piece offered as I then went back to eating. I stayed there all morning, spending time with Miya though I was still in the same clothes I was in yesterday. Around the one in the afternoon, I got a call from Akio and I knew I had to go. I got up from the couch as he said,
"Work calls huh?"
"Yeah but I doubt it's important. If it was, my boss would have called not my partner."
He nodded as I got my sneakers back on and got my helmet and gloves from the table.
"Your time off over?"
"Nah, I just have to check in."
"Oh, okay."
I kissed him once more as I said,
"I'll call you tonight."
He smiled as I went downstairs and outside. I got my helmet on as I started up my bike and sped home. I had to change before I showed up at work. Once I was done, I went to Jia's building. I parked, taking off my helmet as I carried it inside with me as I saw Akio in the lobby.
"About time."
"Sorry. Was it important? I didn't think it was. You didn't sound like it."
"Nah, I just had to get you here."
"How come?"
"Well you know how you skipped out on us the other night?"
"Yeah?"
"We went to the gambling ring. Down near the Red Light district."
"Oh. And?"
"We met the owners."
"How are they?"
"One's kinda stubborn, kinda not wanting to listen, the other one, is more passive, but smart."
"Any names?"
"Yeah, Shingen Daisuke. He's the stubborn one. Nabatone Toshimasa is the other one."
"So is a deal gonna happen or what?"
"Toki's telling Jia right now about everything. Depending on what Jia wants to do, it'll happen."
"But what about the other two?"
"One will need convincing."
I nodded as Toki came out from the elevator. He cupped his hands around his cigarette as he lit and said,
"Jia wants to meet these two."
Akio nodded, watching as smoke exhaled from Toki's mouth as he said,
"When?"
"Tonight or tomorrow."
Akio nodded as he then went into his pocket, getting out his silver cigarette case, the dragon still crawling on the front as he opened it and said,
"Hai, we'll do that. Baby-chu how about tonight? Or you got plans?"
"No, but-"
"Come on Aka-chan, this is kinda like work. 'Sides you know you need to sharpen your skills in something else besides bustin' a cap. Like Li said."
I sighed, hating that he was right and knowing more off that I should take an assignment like this so it could improve my skills. I sighed and said,
"What time we going?"
Akio nodded, lighting his cigarette as he said,
"Around ten tonight. You drive, pick me and Toki up."
"Oh so I gotta be the driver for this? Is that why two asked me?"
Toki laughed as he said,
"Nah man. You are the driver aint ya?"
"Yeah but..."
"Okay then."
I rolled my eyes as I agreed and then I left. I decided to stay with Miya a while longer before he left for work. He was glad when I returned to his apartment. Luckily he had to leave before I had to go to work myself so I didn't even bother telling him about this assignment. Once I went home to change, I got on my black suit, my silk red tie and my black silk shirt underneath. I tied back my hair as I then picked up the keys to the car and went to pick up Akio. The Playboy still needed time to get ready, never pleased with himself until he can look in the mirror and say he was so fine, he would fuck himself if he could. Tonight, was no exception. He took another twenty minutes before he finally came out from the bathroom, shutting his light off as he wore black dress pants and a coat, a dark red wine colored button down underneath, the first few buttons undone as he wore a black fedora, tilted to the side. He buttoned the front of his coat as I said,
"You look like a pimp."
"That's the whole idea."
He gave me a smile before we went to get Toki. When I picked him up, I called first rather then wanting to go to his door. He came downstairs a few minutes later, he too dressed in all black, a fitted shirt on his body, loose baggy jeans on the rest of him. He wore a black wave cap over his black hair while his blonde bangs fell in the front. I then pulled out and went to drive towards the Red Light District. I still sped, not use to driving so slowly anymore. Akio would sit like if nothing was happening, pulling down the vanity mirror as he checked his hat. Once I got to the district, I said,
"Where to?"
Toki moved himself up front slightly as he said,
"Down that street. Then park in the alley."
I went where my directions were as I then parked in the alley, getting out as I set the alarm and then followed Toki and Akio. Toki then flicked his cigarette off to the side as Akio said,
"What time is it?"
"Almost eleven. Your pretty ass couldn't get ready fast enough or what?"
"Hey, I don't just fall out of bed and look this fuckin good okay."
They both laughed as they stopped in front of one of the poster covered walls, Dir en grey staring back at us as we stood there for a while. A moment later a side door opened, close to the poster cover wall as Toki and Akio were motioned in. I followed as Akio looked at the bouncer and said,
"He's with us."
I glared at the bouncer, getting mad that he wouldn't let me in because I looked like a kid. If he would have known who I was I doubt he would have hesitated to let me in.
Anyway, we went inside, the whole area was actually a what appeared to be a basement in the bottom of an old building. There were mostly booking places where people made beats, gambled with each other, a few cards games going around but mostly it was just placing beats on anything and everything in Tokyo. The two guys who I assumed ran the whole thing was at the back. The taller one had short semi-spiked up red hair and wore a white suit, looking over everything, his hands behind his back. His partner was the slightly shorter one, light, honey colored hair fell over his perfect oval face, soft seductive eyes peered out from the strands as fine eyebrows arched over them. Soft makeup floated over his eyes as his slender hands reached up to his suit coat and adjusted the black lapel, a red rose pinned to the side. I walked with Akio and Toki as I said,
"Are those the ones?"
Akio nodded as he said,
"Daisuke is the red head, Toshimasa is the other one."
I nodded as Toki went over to them as he said,
"Daisuke...nice to see you again."
Daisuke nodded, going into his pocket as he took out a silver cigarette case as he opened it and took one out as he lit it. Daisuke nodded as he said,
"What can I do you two for?"
"My boss would like to meet with you if at all possible."
Daisuke exhaled to the side as he said,
"Why should I? I aint making no trouble."
Toshimasa raised a slender hand, putting it on Daisuke's shoulder as he said,
"Who's your boss?"
"Oyabun of the 36 Moons here in Tokyo."
"You work for the 36 Moons?"
"Hell fuckin yeah."
Toshimasa looked at Daisuke as he then said,
"What does your boss want to see us for?"
Akio then interjected as he said,
"You can't make money off our oyabun's land without cutting him in."
Daisuke exhaled again as he said,
"What the fuck! Your boss didn't say shit to us!"
"He's sayin shit to you now though." Said Toki.
Daisuke was about to start saying something again as Toshimasa then said,
"We can't see your oyabun tonight. We're busy. But tomorrow in the afternoon, if that's okay, we can meet with him."
Akio nodded as he said,
"That's fine. Tomorrow at five or so."
Toshimasa nodded as he said,
"Where?"
"Dragon Leaf."
He nodded again as he and Daisuke went to speak and the three of us regrouped. Toki sighed as he said,
"We gotta tell Li he's got an appointment tomorrow."
"You tell him then. You live with him." Said Akio.
I then sighed and said,
"Daisuke seems to have a big mouth. Toshimasa seems to be the smart one."
"That or Toshimasa has been sucking his dick so long that he can make Daisuke shut the fuck up about anything and everything." Said Toki with a smirk.
I looked at them, Daisuke and him seem to be arguing, Daisuke still smoking as Toshimasa tried to relax him and say something to him. I turned away as I said,
"You think?"
Akio nodded as he said,
"Hai. Okay let's get out of here. I ain't placing no bets."
"Let's go then." Toki said.
So we left. We ended up getting some drinks afterwards just so the clothes we wore didn't go to total waste. Afterwards, I took them back home and I went home myself. I didn't feel like staying there so I changed for what to be the millionth time that day and grabbed my bike as I went for a late ride.
The next afternoon when I woke up, I saw it was four. I had slept almost all day because I didn't get back home that morning until like five. I sat up, remembering I had to take Jia to the Dragon Leaf to meet with Toshimasa and Daisuke. I got up, showered and got dressed as I called Akio on my way out the door. I pulled my arm through the sleeve of my coat as he then answered.
"What's up Baby-chu?"
"What time do we have to be there? Does Jia know?"
"Yeah relax. We have to be there at five."
"Okay, I'm assuming I have to get Jia."
"More then likely. I'd call to check if I was you though."
"Okay. I'll see you soon."
I hung up as I then called Jia to make sure. Once confirming everything, I grabbed the keys sitting on table near the door as I ran out and went to pick up Jia. I called once I got there but he said to come up because he was running late. I went to his apartment as he let me in and asked me to sit down.
"Toki is making me late."
"What's new there?"
Jia laughed as I started searching around for my cigarettes. I felt something rub against my leg as I saw it was Toki's kitten. He had gotten a little bit bigger which is why I felt him rub against my leg. I leaned down, stroking the kitten's ears, it's blonde fur falling softly underneath my hand as he purred. Jia then sighed and said,
"I hate that cat."
"How come?"
"It's an animal. I hate all animals."
I was tempted to say something like, well you love Toki. But I decided saying that to my boss was probably a bad idea so I kept to myself and just smiled as I looked down, stroking the kitten for a little while as I had my cigarette. I heard Jia yell at Toki for him to hurry up and he finally came out. He yawned, tying a bandanna around his forehead as his bangs fell around his face, his black hair once again spiked slightly. I say slightly because it's gotten so long the spikes don't stand. They sorta slant backwards.
"I'm here damn. Don't gotta rush me damnit."
He knelt down, picking up his cat as he nuzzled it, kissing the kitten's head as he said,
"Is my baby gonna be okay?"
The kitten purred as Toki kissed it then he set it back down as he Jia rolled his eyes as he said,
"That cat can probably take better care of itself then you could of yourself."
"Shut up and let's go."
Jia laughed slightly as we then left. We didn't get to the Dragon Leaf until twenty after. Akio called as he said he was on his way so I can only assume that Toshimasa and Daisuke were probably around there. Once we got there, I parked the car as I said,
"Who else is suppost to be there?"
"Just you, Akio and Toki."
"Oh. Okay."
I nodded, getting out as did Jia and Toki. I hit the alarm of the car as we went inside the restaurant. The host who loved having Jia there, bowed, serving him and ignoring everyone else. He came over to us as he said,
"Good afternoon Jia. Your usual place is waiting."
"I'm expecting two guests."
"Yes, two gentlemen said they were waiting for you. They're at the bar."
"Good. Invite them to my room. We'll be there."
"Yes sir."
The host bowed again as we went to the back and slid open the rice paper doors as we went inside. Everyone taking off their shoes before we got up to the two steps and then walked around the table and sat down. The waitress came in a few moments later as she took our order for tea and sake before she left. Before she closed the door however, she said,
"Sir, two gentlemen are here for you."
Jia waved his hand allowing them in as Daisuke and Toshimasa came in. Daisuke was in a dark blue suit this time, his hair still semi spiked up as he wore clear brownish yellow tinted glasses. He took off his shoes as Toshimasa walked in. He was still in black, black dress pants and a coat, a white shirt underneath that wasn't buttoned up like last time, a red rose still on his lapel. He toed off his shoes as he and Daisuke then took a seat at the end of the table. Jia went into his pockets retrieving his cigarette case as he got one out and put it in his mouth. Once he snapped the lid shut, Toki got his lighter out and lit the cigarette for Jia. After an exhale, Jia said,
"Who's who?"
"I am Nabatone Toshimasa. This is my partner Shingen Daisuke."
Jia nodded as they both bowed their heads slightly. Jia then put his arms down on the table as tilted his head to the slightly as he said,
"I normally don't have a problem with illegal gambling, mostly because it's not hurting anyone and if it is, I don't care because they should know better. What I do have a problem with is when it's done on my property."
"It's done in an old building that no one's been inside in years." Said Daisuke.
"I know. But it's still mine. The area in which you operate is my territory. Whatever trouble you cause, blood you spill, it's on me."
"You didn't say a word when we first came in." Daisuke continued.
"Probably because I didn't know. I'm a yakuza see and I only hear of shit that happens when it's threatening me. Little shit like this is something I won't hear about for a while."
"Our operation is far from little."
"Well then I stopped it just in time."
Daisuke was getting pissed. Toshimasa seemed to realize this without even looking at him as he spoke.
"Jia, what do we have to do to get headway here? We did not mean to intrude on your territory."
Daisuke looked at him angrily as Jia then said,
"How big is your operation that I'm not aware of."
Toshimasa sighed as he was about to say when the waitress came in. She set the tea down along with the sake. She then said,
"Will anyone order dinner?"
I ordered dinner. Akio did as well as did Toshimasa. Once the waitress was done, she bowed her head and left. Jia then waited for Toshimasa to continue.
"There's a small area in Okinawa. It's a little better then this one. Also in Sapporo and Yokohoma. We have a small set up here because the last thing we wished to do is draw attention to ourselves."
"Did you know about the 36 Moons here?"
"Yes. That's why the set up is small and we only run booking and card games. The operation in Sapporo or even in Osaka is much better and bigger. We run full casinos."
"You run these on my land. How did you manage to do it without being caught for so long?"
"We are owners of the game Jia. I run the books, the money, the accounts, I make sure we stay clear of trouble. Daisuke runs the floor, he manages everything outside of the office and is the quiet promoter. Together we managed to do this for a good ten years."
"How long you been operating in Tokyo?"
"Not very long. A year or so."
"No wonder. I've been busy this time around."
"We don't wish to loose money Jia. So we will cut a deal with you."
Daisuke sighed, looking down at his tea. Jia finished smoking as he rubbed it out in the ashtray as I served him a cup of tea. He then said,
"What ties do you have?"
"Ties?"
"Connections, links, people you know. Because if you managed to set up shop in Sapporo, Okinawa, Yokohoma and Osaka without me catching on then I'm gonna assume you may have had some ties to maybe some of my enemies."
"We had a few ties who lent us money to start but we paid them off."
"So you're independent of anything having to do with the yakuza."
"We didn't deal with yakuza before hand. We have had threats and such, but money makes the world go round."
"I'm not threatening you just to let you know."
"Sure as hell could have fooled me." Said Daisuke.
Toshimasa looked at him as if to silence him as Jia looked at him as well. Daisuke didn't take it back, or apologize or even flinch from Jia's glare. Toshimasa cleared his elegant throat as he then said,
"We understand that you're not threatening us, but if you're not, we'd like to make any kind of deal with you in order to be left alone."
"And why should I let you make money off me?"
"Because we're good at what we do. The more people come around us, the more money you would make in the same area. Since you seem to own chunks of it, they would obviously flock to stores, clubs and stores owned there."
Jia took that into consideration as he took a drink from his cup and then looked at Akio. Akio tapped his cigarette on the ashtray as he said,
"How much do you make in a week?"
"About one hundred million yen."
Jia nodded as he said,
"That's a lot of money."
"We total it up by Sunday. On Sunday after we count the days from Monday onward, including the money we make when there are sporting events going on, the card games and the other pointless gambling people do, we make about one hundred million yen."
Akio nodded and said,
"A percentage of that should suffice."
Toshimasa looked a little upset at this point. Akio then said,
"It's not always guaranteed that people would go anywhere else but to gamble. Anything else might not be of importance. But that percentage is guaranteed at all times."
"I understand..." Said Toshimasa.
He picked up his cup as he took a drink when the waitress came back sometime later with our dinner. We were quiet while everyone ate. After so much silence Jia said,
"You seem unhappy with the terms of agreement."
"Just how much of a percentage are you asking for?" Said Daisuke.
Akio then tucked his hair behind his ear as he said,
"Depends. We'll have to discuss it."
Toshimasa said,
"How much do you want?"
"We'll meet down the middle." Said Jia.
I went on eating as they discussed the deal. Toki just drank, having a cigarette as he listened in. I figured I should listen as well but I was hungry. As I picked up my bowl of rice, eating carefully, I looked over at Daisuke and Toshimasa. They seem to be going over some part of the deal. Akio then said,
"Twenty percent."
"Fifteen."
"Twenty is fair and it's not asking for half."
Toshimasa then sighed and said,
"Twenty is fine."
"Toshimasa!"
Daisuke looked at him, clearly angry as Toshimasa looked back at him, a fierce, yet gentle look on his smooth features as he said,
"Daisuke, he's right. Twenty is better then half."
Daisuke took a deep breath as Toshimasa said,
"You have a deal Jia."
Jia nodded, taking a drink from his cup as Akio said,
"We'll still need to discuss a form of payment."
"I understand."
One thing I noticed about Toshimasa was how he handled thing. He was the business half of that partnership. If it was all up to Daisuke, they might have been killed a while ago because Daisuke had a mouth on him that could seriously get him in trouble. Yet at the same, his eyes had no fear. They were hard as marble, piercing and unwavering. He had a mean, stern look on his face that made him a difficult person to stand up against. However, Toshimasa seemed to be invulnerable to that deadly glare. We finished up dinner then Daisuke and Toshimasa said,
"We have to leave for tonight. Tomorrow evening is the only time that we do not open the area. So we could go over the final details then. Is that fine?"
Jia looked at Toshimasa since he knew he would be making a business deal with him as he said,
"Yeah that's fine. Where do you want to meet?"
Daisuke then said,
"You got a place of business?"
"Yes."
"We'll come to you."
Akio then told him where Jia's building was as we then parted ways.
